Default rear pipe hot

on my 99 flht carb. the rear cyl. seens to be running hotter than front. my pipes are discolored more on rear than the front. i think i may have a intake leak. the front plug is a good brown color and the rear is brown with a little white . the bike seems to go good except when i hit hard at top end it brakes down. i,m thinking that my be not enough octane?? it do not idle high to think a vac leak? whats the best way to rule out a intake leak??[:@]

Check for an intake leak.
