I have a 2005 Road King that has developed a ticking sound when the RPM's increase. I took it to the local Harley dealer who advises me there is nothing they can do with itand that some Harley's do this. I love the bike but it's driving me nuts ! I have heard that synthetic oil may help.....any ideas out there ?
Nice, " some harleys do this" Thats waht you want to hear when you have a problem. Synth will help quiet down your noise. If its real badI would go up to the next weight oil in synthetic and that will quiet it down. Hell , if they arnt going to help then solve the problem yourself. No one will ever know wgat weight oil yuo are using when they change it or service it. I wouldnt tell anybody what your doing that has anything to do with your warranty if you have 1.
Sounds like what my '07 is doing. I'm just starting the process of trying to solve this. If I do something tha fixes it I'll let you know, going to switch to synthetic this week, octane booster this weekend. If you get yours solved let me know so I can try the same thing.
I hate to be the pessimist here, but some tick like bombs, some tick like clocks, but most all of them tick to some degree, or at least the 4 I've owned. I wouldn't waste a lot of time chasing it down honestly.

Minor ticking I can live with, after all you are sitting right above the engine and the valves, injectors etc. are going to make some noise. But at times the ticking is so loud I can't hear my stock exaust. It's even embarassing at times. No this morning I could hear a very slight ticking didn't bother me at all. I did add octane booster anyway and could not hear any difference we'll see if I hear any loud ticking for the rest of this tank.
My 95" build w/ 20/50 dino ticked like a roullete wheel, changed BACK to Mobil 1 15-50 syn (non V-twin) now she purrs again. $23.00 for 5 qts at wall-mart..is bike ALL stock ?? cams,p-rods ?? Try the syn. what's to lose ??
Whether it's normal or not, the ticking from the top end can only be from the rocker arms/valves/pushrods. Every OHV engine I have ever owned has ticked to some degree or another. It's due to the needed clearances in the valvetrain. If it's more than a ticking, like a rattle that gets really bad with rpm, then you've got a problem.
If the dealer syas it's normal, try an INDY shop. Most places won't mind just listening to it. If they say it's normal, then there ya go.
BTW - have you changed helmets, windscreens or anything like that recently? I know I can hear a lot more noise with a taller windshield on mine. More reflected noise and less wind noise...

RE: spring/valve ticking
If it's not normal valvetrain noise, then my prime suspect would be a bad lifter. Keep in mind though that all valvetrains make noise, some more than others. If, for instance, you've got an aftermarket, fast ramp, high-lift cam(s) and heavy valve springs, your valvetrain can sound like a sewing machine and still be normal.
