My 2002 RKC just turned 77k and getting ready to change the oil what do you guys think stay 20-50 or should I go with something different at this miliege
I've got 60K+ since the day it was new, changed every 2-2.5K miles with 20-50. First at 100 miles, then 500, then 1000, then 2000. Those first changes in my opinion are critical cause you can watch what's happening inside. In your case I'd say, "Stay with it". You'll be glad you did. If your engine likes it, it's been good to you. If not, you'd know by now. I too believe if it's working for you, why change for change sake? The key, IMHO, is keeping it clean, rather than brand or type. Of course there are better, more expensive oils and lubricants, but if it's clean, it can do it's job. I've decided to run the MOCO's 20-50 and change it more often than say a Mobil 1 and letting it stay in there longer. Just one rider's thoughts. But I've got 500K+ easy in the last 40 years of riding, and my motors treat me good, cause I treat them good. Keeping it clean is the best advise I can pass on. And don't bother changing it without putting a clean filter on too. For what it's worth, I run Red Line Heavy Duty Shock Proof in the Trans and I think that stuff is bulletproof. If somebody else happens to get into your trans they'll think you're running peptol bismol in it. I've had more than one good laugh telling rookies that I run peptol bismol in my trans cause sometimes she gets an upset stomach. And then when they tell me I"m lying, I pull the dipstik and show em. You ought to see the look on their face. LOL, Good Riding, CCRyder
I would stick with 20w-50. It is recommended and has been working for you for that long. I would recommend that you use a synthetic in the engine, primary, and as posted above red line shockproof in the trans. You will get a million different opinions on what brand to use for oil. I have used Mobil 1 V-twin 20W-50 and HD Syn 3 20W-50 so far. I am reasonably sure that if you stick with a synthetic you will be safe no matter what brand you use.
I did switch my 07 Ultra to Red line shock proof heavy in the trans. It seemed to quiet down some of the 5th gear whine I had and also seems to shift a bit smoother. Also as posted above, it does look like pepto! My HD dealer told me I should try it and I like it so far with just under 10 K miles.
