Ha.....I had one this morning. I used a web type bungee cord to strap something down to the luggage rack. After I delivered the stuff to my friends house I left the bungee on the back of the rack and it wrapped around the axle. Doh! It had a heck of a time getting it off on the side of the road. Luckily it didn't hurt anything!
I never had the tour pak come open like that, but one of my saddlebags did...big surprise. So now I have another little tiny rule...the bags and tour pak get latched every time they're closed. Even if I'm going to open them again in 3 seconds. No exceptions. Closed? Latched. Period. But that's just me.
Yikes! I have forgotten to latch mine once or twice but never had it fly open. That could cause a real problem. Glad you didn't have a worse time of it.

I once forgot to latch my tourpak on a windy day. Got on the freeway with the crosswind, got up to speed, looked in the rear view mirror and saw the lid wide open. I felt lucky that there was no damage to the pak or hinges.
I know a guy who was towing a tent trailer down a steep stretch of freeway in the mountains and it opened up on him. There was no immediate place to pull over. He said it felt like there was a huge parachute tied to the back of the bike. Talk about butt pucker....
