The back cylinder goes into both pipes for "scavenging", which has something to do with the exhaust pulse from one cylinder pulling the exhaust from the other. \\; It helps with torque, which is why true duals give a slight loss of low end power.
No, I have not checked it with a thermometer, just my legs. If you want to beat the heat and get the most from your bike. Switch the exhaust to true duals, geat a high flow air cleaner and some type of fuel management. You can see what I am running in my sig. You can also do some searches in here for stage one you will find a wealth of information as well as a lot of options.
Tell us about your bike. What are you riding and what have you done.

I bought an 08 FLHX about two weeks ago with ABS, Cruise and security and logged a few hundred miles on it and trying to decide what I am going to do, if anything. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; I have to agree with you that there is lot of heat coming up between your legs. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; I was just wondering how much of this heat can be reduced. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; I'm an engineer by profession, I gotta have numbers!! \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; LOL
Sorry Dude, no numbers for ya on this one. The best thing I can tell you is that bike out of the factory is running dangerously lean and lean fuel mixtures mean excess heat. You can see for yourself, pull your spark plugs, I'll bet they are white powdered.

Must have done that to satisfy the EPA.
The call it "free torque" from the cross-over pipe. \\; \\; It's my understanding that it adds a few ft lbs. \\; However, talked to a guy from Cobra installing a set a true duals and he said just the opposite. \\;
Call Steve at nightrider.com. He invented the XIED system for HD's.....he is an engineer and can talk the talk. It will change your air/fuel ratio from a lean (hot) 14.7:1 to 13.8:1 (much cooler). I just installed the XIED and it made a noticable difference in lowering temp on pipes and throttle response is much improved. At $100, I think it's a real bargain. Installation is pretty much foolproof.....you can only install it correctly due to configuration of attaching ends. The hardest part was clipping the zip ties and installing new ties.

Let me guess.
The guy form Cobra had several
true duals in stock that he wanted to sell
With true duals you will loose some high end power.
