After years of riding my 1978 Honda CB750 into the ground and "borrowing" one of my dad's HDs, I finally have cash in hand and am looking to by my own. As I've gotten older, the novelty of a 85 - 95 MPH windblast has worn off, so a fairing is a must. The only experience I have with a faired bike is my dad's 78 Electra glide, 75th Anniversary Edition and 95 Ultra Peace Officer's Edition and I actually dropped the '95 during a low speed turn into a gas station as the weight of the newer ('95 vs. '78) fork-mounted fairing surprised me, so a frame monted fairing is a must. \\; I have about 10K to play with and I am looking at Sport Glides and Evo Road Glides. The '95 is comfy at speed, but that drop is always in the back of my mind. \\; I love the looks of the Road Glide(I even have a soft spot for the old Tour Glides!), but I've seen a few clean FXRTs that have piqued my interest and as I research them and the FXR in general, it seems like a righteous scoot.
Does anyone have any pros and cons of either, or things that I should look out for? Sorry if this issue has been discussed before.
Bunz if your biggest issue is \\; front weight, Go with a ROADGLIDE<\\; fltr, the fairing \\; is attached and you only turn the wheel,( Plus its a better handling bike overall) MY OPINION<\\;. bottom line is \\; GO \\; to a bike nite in your area, and Talk to the locals, maybe \\; con a ride on a model you think fits ya. \\; NO one can talk for your seat of the pants experience, GOOD LUCK<\\; let us know what you choose.
It would have to be a Road Glide, but seeing I have one I might have a little bias on the matter, I'd look at some twin cam's if I could swing it just because there is so much more aftermarket support for them. Also in 2004 they changed the faring to a more stremlined shape, the shield is layed a few degrees back I'm told. The FLTRI is a great running and handling bike, with cruise and a radio, makes for a pleasant ride, I get a set of lowers to when you could, you can thank me later
I rented a Road Glide for a week during my vacation, about a month ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't ridden an FXR in years and even then it was only a quick trip around the neighborhood when my uncle stopped by\\; I don't know that I've ever seen an FXRT on the street, just the few that I've gone to look at recently. I'd love a Twin Cam Road Glide, but my budget is only 10K, maybe 12K for the RIGHT bike. \\; I'm in no rush as I still have my CB and my dad's Shovel is in my backyard right now[sm=icon_rock.gif]\\; he actually told me to wait until the winter to find a deal because the Shovel is d@mned-near mine anyway.
FXRT ? Thought the last one produced  \\;was 1992. FXR \\;frame was built by Eric Buell when he worked for HD. One of the best handling bikes at the time.

Had an FXR convertible and wish I still had it. FXRT was a smaller version of the Tour Glide. Same frame as the FXR but with hard bags \\;,small tour pack and a frame mounted faring.

You pose a difficult question. \\; If you look at my sig. you'll see I couldn't make a choice between FXR &\\; FLT.......
I don't have an FXRT, but there's only a little difference in FXR's. \\; The FXR with or without a fairing is a light, agile, &\\; comfortable bike. \\; I've been from one end of this country to the other on an FXR, &\\; with the right seat there's no reason to be uncomfortable. \\; OTOH, the FLTR is big &\\; comfortable. \\; It has more carry room along with more weight. \\; It's a little more work to push around, but then you're supposed to ride it, not push it.
10K should get you an FXR with a little left to fix any problems, or probably just enough to pay for an EVO era FLT. \\; Both are pretty rare. \\; I'd like to find an EVO FLT in need of a motor. \\; I have a spare Ultra 96" sittin' on the floor. \\; It'd make a nice spare tourer..........
I think 92 was the last year of the FXRT, but I'm not overly concerned about the age if the bike has "good bones". Also, the FXRTs are averaging about 7K-8K, whick would leave some change for go-fast goodies. I haven't seen lots of Road Glides under 10K, but I've seen them often enough to know it's possible with cash in hand.

Have to disagree with your pops, if you want one, you better get it now, as the market for used bikes is drying up fast. The knowledge that HD is cutting production drastically has people hanging on to them, and buying them up, because prices will skyrocket on them soon. Just my 2cents
The FXRT is a great bike,I rode an FXRS for 10 years and over 100K miles and loved it.
I think it would do you nicely,very comfortable bike and great hadnling.
The only down side I see would be if you want to ride two up for long trips.
That is why I first bought an FLHTC and am now on my second one,so the wife could ride in comfort.
If I was a solo rider I'd likely still be on the old FXR,wish I had an FXRT for a daily commuter.
