Jusy my own opinion and what I just did less then a month ago. I bought a metric bike last year new. I could have used it as trade in towards my new SG, but I did not want to loose my A$$ on it, so I kept my metric to sell out right, and bought the new SG out-right. When the time is right the metric bike will sell it-self to the right person.
5000 miles on a 2001 is not a lot of miles at all. Depending on what kind of extra items he has on the bike, it may also sell it self to the right person. Only thing is, he just has to wait it out.

Check around on sales prices online or wherever and get a true idea of what the bike is worth on the open market.
