Exhaust modifications
I am going to change the exhaust system on my 2001 Road King. It presently has some "off brand" ( I was not able to find any manufacturer's name on the mufflers) true duals with no baffles in the mufflers. It is much too loud for me. Should I go to Rinehart true duals? Also, if I add a stage 1 air kit do I have to make any other modifications to the fuel management etc? I recently bought the bike with the true duals and no stage 1 and I do not know if the privious owner did a HD download. Is that necessary on a 2001?

If it has true duels you could go with just replacing the slip-ons. If you changed your air cleaner to a high flow then you will have to with a new download or a management system. If the A/C has not been changed then there probably was not a new download done. They say if you just change the exhaust you do not have to remap, but I'm not sure about that, mine started to blue right away when I just changed to new slip-ons.
Thanks for your reply Jim. You have given me a lot of good information. I thought about just changing the pipes and going to slip-ons, but I did not like the way in which the heat shields were secured to the pipes, they were held in place by a number of small coil springs with hooks bent into each end and the bracket which secured the right pipe to the frame behind the drivers board was a very cheap steel strap which had turned a very dark color. It just looked like a poor quality installation so I thought I would just replace all of it and get something of a better quality
