Exccessive pinging under load (too advanced) or loss of power (too retarded). \\; You do have the EVO, right?
 \\;
If you want to try adjusting this yourself do a google. \\; Lot's of resources out there.
 \\;
TC88's have MAP sensor instead of VOES.
85 evo. the bike has an occasional miss. it just cuts out for a split second and then it goes again. it's like the modual is changing the spark advance. the advance is regulated by the voes. i replaced the ign. modual,pick up in the nose cone,coil and the ign circuit breaker. i think i'll try the main breaker next, but it doesn't act like that's the problem.
In 2005 I had a Chop that used a 96 ci S&\\;S engine. \\; Stock as built did not have a VOES installed and timing was correct. \\; Installed the VOES and the pinging went away.
 \\;
What you are describing seems to be an intermittent electrical problem and with the wiring on my bike I had similar problems. \\; Discovered some loose and corroded connections. \\; Cleaned them and used some dielectric grease and tightened everything down...symptoms went away and never came back.
 \\;
If you go onto S&\\;S website, there are technical manuals available for download on their products. \\; One of the ignition manuals has how to wire up and use a VOES in the ignition system. \\; It also covers how to test the VOES switch to ensure it is working properly. \\; A VOES is either closed or open dependent upon vacuum created by the engine.....the off an on modes tells the ignition box whether to retard timing or not. \\; If the VOES was out of whack, you would get problems associated with bad timing...pinging, loss of power, etc...not ignition cut out. \\; Your connections from the ignition to the coil(s) or power leads to the ignition box/coils are suspect.

Hope this helps.
