Paint Problem
Last year I had a local painter do a front fender in Black Cherry Pearl. He removed the rivets and welded in lowering brackets. It came out so nice I went back to him for my inner fairing paint early this spring and I was equally happy with the job. The match to the factory outer fairing was dead on.
Now for the problem, I crashed my bike a month ago and after settling with the ins. co. I went to this painter to have the entire bike painted. I told him if the rest of the bike looked as good as the front fender I would be happy. He said "would you expect anything less from me"? After I put everything back together I started to think it didn't have the "pop" in the sun like the stock paint had and after taking my original inner fairing and holding it next to the bike my suspicions were confirmed, it was not a match.
I stopped by to talk to the painter and it turns out he used a different manufacturer's paint, not the same paint as used on my fender and first inner fairing. I said " I wish you would have discussed changing paint brands with me before hand" and he said he just did a BCP SG with the same paint with no complaints. I let it go for the time being as I wanted to see what it looked like with the new factory tour pack.
I mounted the new factory painted tour pak yesterday and the color difference is obvious. The new paint is more what my wife calls a smokey plum pearl. The paint job in my opinion is flawless, but not the match I was expecting or felt I paid for. Should I be expecting him to completely repaint everything?

Man, I would say it should have been conveyed that he was ysing different paint but the besy way would have to have been to repaint everything at once. There is always adifference even with the same paint. HGave him repaint your front fender again and chalk it up to a lesson learned.

You may expect it, but I doubt if you'll get it. \\; Have you discussed with him the possibility of shooting the entire thing over to get the match? \\; Might be a good idea to have the bike there to show him the obvious difference in paint on the bike and the tour pak. \\; He might be receptive as he changed vendors without discussing with you. \\; Good luck, CCRyder

He's seen the bike but didn't have anything to compare it to. Tomorrow or Tuesday I'm going to stop by with the tour pak on the bike. Maybe I'm stuck with "Smokey Plum Pearl".

i am always having things painted and customizing parts, it is always best to take a part that is already painted and have it matched than it is to use the paint code, even though i am going to have my bike custom painted, i am completing a stereo project and changing many parts on the bike, for now, i took a factory part off the bike and had it color matched and i couldnt be happier, you would think that black is black, but it doesnt quite work that way...
anyhow, i would have your painter just re paint the tour pack... and you should be fine, i doubt he would repaint the whole bike...

Good news! I just returned from the body shop it \\;was apparent to the owner that it wasn't a good match. He said the only right thing to do is to repaint the entire bike with the original paint.[/align]  \\;[/align] The paint rep just happened to be there and we all looked at the 2 paints by dipping a stir stick in the 2 cans and letting it run back into the cans. It was impossible to see any difference. He's still not sure what went wrong but he's taking full responsibility for it and said he'll turn the parts around in 7-10 days.[/align]  \\;[/align] He just happens to be in the middle of another BCP partial paint job on a SG. He's hoping the paint will match. He's going to call when the tank is painted so we can compare it to mine.[/align]  \\;[/align] I'm not too crazy about having to strip it down again but if that's the price I have to pay to be happy with it....so be it.
