I haven't mounted mine yet, but I think Grover has the right idea. That is where I am planning on mounting mine. It seems like the most logical spot on a bagger.
I've been riding since 1981 and have not had one stolen yet. I have 2 custom painted helmets and they have never been touched. I think you are safe on the seat and mirror or hanging it off the throttle like I do. That's 18 dollrs that you could put to more chrome.
I have been wondering about this because my full face helmets run about 400 a shot, and with 2 of us it is a big money risk to leave them loose on the bike. The FLHTPI is the first bike I have ever owned that didn't have helmet hooks.
Besides that Massachusetts is a helmet law state and I'd hate to be 200 miles from home with no skid lid
