I didn't know there was a benefit to those wind deflectors. I thought it was just a shiny piece of chrome. A set just sold on E-bay for $25.00 but I was away and didn't get my bid in. I don't think they are popular.
The HD wind deflectors (#58121-85B) work so well that I take mine off when it starts to get warm outside. I have found out that when the temp heats up you won't get as much air flowing by you to keep you cool with the deflectors on. I put them back on in the fall when it starts to cool again. I also installed the front fork air baffle(#58520-79TC). Between the 2, the amount of air flowing by is cut way down. I don't like the look with my chrome lowers but they sure work.
I have the fork air baffels and the one that mounts below the trees between the forks. Wjat a difference they make. Like somebody mentioned, most of the turbulance is comming from below. I don't plan on leaving the baffels on much longer because we are starting to stay in the 60+ temp range.
Today, I put the chrome HD lowers on the RK to see how they worked. I'm running the shorter detachable windscreen. The effect was amazing! Most of the turbulence was coming up from below -- I'd previously tried the Jacks flaps vest with moderate success, but the lowers virtually eliminated all turbulence to the chest and head area at all freeway speeds tested. They go on or off in about 5 minutes -- just 4 existing acorn nuts.
Hey Gunk, How tall are you. I'm looking for a shield for my custom, but not sure of the height.
I'm 5'11". I went with the Harley low profile detachable shield (57767-00). I can see the ground from approx. 20' out. Works great. Anything higher and I'd be looking through it.
I used to have a pair of wind deflectors on my old '99 Road King and they were also very good for deflecting water when riding in the rain and also kept some bug splatter off air cleaner and lower front of the gas tank. I really didn't care for the look, but they were very functional.
Anyone know if any aftermarket co. make clear plastic lowers that would work with the RK windshield? Idon't like the looks of the MOCO chrome ones (Just my preference).
Do the HD lowers have to come off when riding in hotter weather? I would think they're limiting the airflow across the cylinder heads. But that's just an uneducated guess....
