I use a Nuvi with a ram mount. Just throw a baggie over it with a rubber band when it rains. Works like a charm. I bought a 750 2 months ago from Sams Club for $299. This is my second nuvi they work great. Oh yea the 1st one (nuvi 350) is still working great and in the wife's car now.
I just did a lot of homework on this, and my most important capability was the ability to build my own iteinerary's. I looked at a lot of others and didn't want to spend a lot, but wanted good functionality, a small physical package and low cost.
I landed on a refurbed Garmin Quest. It doesn't hold the entire map of the world or US, but it will hold all of the Northeast and Canada without reloading or changing maps and thats enough for me.
I use the Garmin StreetPilot 2610. It has been discontinued but you can still find them on the internet (ebay, etc.) cheap. You can probably get one for about $100. Installed it on my Ultra using a Ram Mount. The 2610 is water resistant and uses a memory card instead of a hard drive.
I also have a Garmin StreetPilot. Had one in the car and picked this one up on ebay for 105. Made a mount using the existing mount, sheet metal and some screws. I pop it off the mount and put it in the glove box when it rains. We like getting lost and when we are about 1/2 day away from home I just select Home and sorta follow the directions. But there is always that road that looks better so we get home eventually.
A friend of mine bought a Garmin 2610 off ebay a few weeks ago for $159.00. It was a refurb with a one year warranty and it's waterproof. Same model I've got, it's a good unit.
I have a Garmin Quest and really like it. It doesn't have all the bells & whistles that the new ones have but it is waterproof. Tigerdirect.com has refurb quest for $99. I thinks that would be hard to beat for the price.
Magellan Crossover - fully loaded with maps, waterproof and will run 8 hours on the battery, so you don't have to wire it to the bike. $200. Once you get it, call Magellan and ask for the latest maps - you should be able to get them for free.
