Default Question (Brakes)

Is it really crucial to have ABS braking system on your bike, if you only plan on riding in good weather? Everybody has different riding habits. Is it worth the extra 800 dollars?

What is your take on the ABS issue?
Thanks in advance.

I have an '08 with ABS, but only bought it because I didn't mind spending the money and the dealer had an ABS RG in the color I was looking for. To me ABS is not a must have item but it is nice to have. Only you can say whether it is worth the extra money to you. The Brembo brakes are awesome. ABS is also just one more system to have problems with. If you think that ABS will prevent an accident you should get it. Both of my cars are full of front and side airbags but I can't even think of anyone I know who has had one go off. Never the less I wouldn't have a car without airbags. I have had ABS save my behind in an old Honda Accord I used to own (an oblivious woman pulled out in front of me) but I may never need it again. Buy ABS if YOU think it is worth the money. Some guys won't have a bike without it and some wouldn't have a bike with it.

Not really crucial. My bike doesn't have it cause it wasn't available. The back wheel will lock very easily in a panic stop. If I ever trade, abs will be a must have.

Don't know about you but down here in South Florida good weather can turn into bad weather in a matter of minutes. I wouldn't count on always riding in good weather and I wouldn't plan on ABS saving you in bad weather. It all comes down to knowing your bike and practicing your riding skills. I have plenty of experience riding in some really nasty rain without ABS. If it was offered in 07, I would have gotten it but, again, I wouldn't count on ABS to make up for a lack of skills.

ABS brakes were first available on the 08 models. Before that, there was no such thing as ABS brakes on Harley Davidsons so I would say it is not absolutly necessary to have them. They may be nice to have, but not necessary.

Accidents or near accidents don't just happen in bad weather. A car pulling out in front of you can cause a wheel lock-up real easily when you hit the brakes too hard, and frequently a lockup ends up in the bike going down. I think ABS is one of the best options HD has offered in recent years and well worth the cost.

I also ride in Central & South Fla and agree w/roxnatwist. Nothing is going to make up for lack of skills, that being said even seasoned riders will lock up the brakes in a panic stop. The rear brake if you lock it up and then let off you are going to high side, front brake you lock it up, you are going down. ABS will allow you some control over your motor during these conditions. I been riding for 35 years. I rode as a Motor Officer. I would never again own a bike without ABS (owned 5 HDs). It is well worth $800. I wish we had it in the old days.

ABS is the best accessory you can ever get for your bike. $800 amortized over the life of the bike is not that much. You won't know when you'll need them, but they'll work when it matters most rain or shine. They've saved my bacon a few times.
