Default security system question

I will be picking up my new SG in a few day and it has a security system.
The dealer didn't explain alot about how it works. Would you guys explain it to me? I know that I will need to carry a fob in my pocket to let the bike start, but thats all I know.
Thank you!

The book explains it well. Key thing is make sure to read the section about programing the PIN number into the system incase of a fob failure. Other than that its basic fob present bike starts no fob starter disabled...

The fob is a simple radio transmitter. Within about 5 feet of the bike the signal disables the security system. Move the fob beyond that radius & the security system activates & disables the ignition & fuel pump. The basic system comes without the siren. Either negotiate for a siren, or pay for one & install it yourself. It's a simple plug in.

The security system makes the bike & bike keys easy to use. I usually hate fobs, but with this one I have it on a ring with the bike key & a house key. Drop it in my pocket & forget about all of it unless I want to unlock a bag or something. If you're parked in a reasonable location there's usually no reason to lock the ignition since the only thing turning it on will do without the fob is cause the alarm to sound. Moving the bike also sounds the alarm, & most people won't try to carry off a bike that's makin' a lot of noise.

It's a very good idea to keep an extra battery (2032) with you. Mine died at six months and the bike would not start. I couldn't get the manual disable to work. A riding buddy handed me a battery, I installed it and the bike started right up. Now I carry one in a saddle bag at all times.

Another tip is to carry the instructions on how to manually disarm the system, and remember the PIN number. Oh, and don't drive off without the FOB in your pocket.

I was about to start a new thread asking about the wisdom of adding the security system to my '07. I actually didn't want it at first, thinking about the $300 I was saving, but now I think it would be very convenient not having to deal with locking the bike every time I walk away from it. I use my bike for errands, riding at least several times per week, and the ritual of locking the ignition gets old.

So, you guys with security systems, would you recommend adding it? It would cost $222 from Zanotti's (including shipping), plus another $75 to initialize it at the dealer. That latter task is a ripoff but I don't know a way around it. Anybody know a trick way to initialize it?

And another question: Have any of you had any trouble with this accessory? If so, please describe.

I doubt if I would add a siren, but am thinking about this upgrade mostly for the convenience factor. The bike stays in a secure garage 99% of the time, so I'm not too worried about it being stolen.

Yeah, I'd add it. Sounds like we might ride in a similar fashion. My bikes live in a locked/alarmed garage at home, & I'm old biker contentious when parkin' away from the house (back to the curb, sit where you can see it, etc.) but there are always times you need a little security. I used to carry locks & chains. Now I feel pretty secure knowin' the bike will holler for help if someone tries to carry it off, & won't work till they figure out how to remove the security system if they do get it.

I've had alarms on a few bikes. Never lost one, but I've caught a few nitwits thinkin' they could sit on 'em/try 'em out in parkin' lots. An alarm changes their minds, warns me, & usually gets the nitwit a good *** chewin'.

iclick, i vote for the security system. then after you've gotten that done, spend the 10 bucks and get the siren from radio shack. yeah, it doesn't have the battery back up, and its a little more involved installation wise than the hd one, but for the cost, its well worth it.

also, set your pin up immediately, learn the process for the manual override, and practice it every now and again.

never had any problems with mine.

It's simple and it works great. Consider adding the siren and the remote so you have a little more peace of mind. I am very satisfied.

Default Security system

I absolutely swear by the factory system. I added the siren to my '05 EGC ($79.00), I figured that during a sunny day bystanders may not notice the turn signals flashing if someone was tampering with my ride but if it had the screaming siren, the nuisance facor would make the tamperer think twice about continuing or hanging around after it started wailing. A word of caution, if you live or park near a Navy installation, a ship's radar can prevent you from arming and disarming the system. I have experienced this problem several times at the Naval shipyard in Bremerton Wa. I also keep an extra fob battery in my tour pac so I don't have to mess with the manual deactivation sequence if the fob dies.

Thanks to all y'all for giving your opinions on the security system. I think I'll bite, but don't know about the siren, extra fob, or remote yet. I'll search for a thread on the RS siren, as I know I saw something some months back but didn't pay attention to it. I'm still pissed about giving the stealer $75 to initialize it, which is little more than plugging the ECM into a computer.
