Default Cam only upgrade?

I'm seriously considering going to an Andrews 21 or 26 cam in my Ultra in order to gain a little grunt down low for 2-up riding. I'd like to hear from anyone who's done a cam only upgrade about whether or not you thought it was money well spent.

Some folks whose opinions I trust are suggesting I wait until I have the money to do cams, big bore and headwork all at once. I don't doubt that this would be the better way to go, but, seriously, if the cam upgrade gives me what I'm looking for I'd be happy at that. Funds are an issue right now, gotta get the younguns through college.

I ride fairly conservatively when 2-up and need the added torque down low. I'm not a hot-rodder and I don't want a high compression pinger, just more "oomph". Thoughts?

I am planning on doing the cams with stage1 and T-Max only on my '07 96. This will give plenty of grunt. I also understand it will help a little with the heat the motor puts out because of the exhaust lobe configuration.

The 21 may cause a ping under 2500 but a good tuner should be able to get it right. The 26 is popular and works well and the SE 204 is adopt the same as the 26 but would pull a little longer.

I thought the guys over at HTT were suggesting the TW6-6? Seems like the one you're looking for if just cams are the route you end up going.

Doing just cams with no head work seems to be like a waste of money and time with the 96in motors. IF you do head work, then you might as well go big bore so this brings you right back to needing to do it all at once.

Save your money and do an HQ 103 or 107 and be done with it is my suggestion.

I want to agree with UltraKla$$ic. I have suggested the woods 6-6 if other mods are in the future. And on a bone stock bike to add the 4* off set gear to make it work well. And when the compression is bumped, remove the advance. But if you are really, truly doing nothing but cams, the TW 26 or SE 204 are about the best. Put some thought into what you are looking for today and what may be in the future. The woods cam and gear are a little pricey but it keeps the door open for future mods.

I installed Head-Quarters HQ-0034 bolt in cams in my '04 EG w/ Rinehart TD's and SE a/c and they really woke up the 88; enough so I don't even think about a 95; and, I ride with guys with various 95" builds and they are either not as strong as my bike or only barely so (the only exception being those with full head porting/not street-porting) and not worth the $$$ IMO.

Same cam in a 96 is HQ 500 and lots of guys have used them and are happy.

Good luck with your research.

I thought about upgrading to a TW26 when I first bought my '07 SG, but seeing two dyno charts on this combo suggested that it was not a good choice if low-end TQ was the desired result. I'm interested in passing trucks in 5th gear, not winning my class at the local dragstrip. For the former you need TQ and the later HP.

I superimposed four dyno charts and compared them to a stock bike with Fuel Moto Power Package (Jackpot mufflers, PCIII with special map, and AC). The HD255 had AC and 2-in-1 exhaust and I don't recall the muffler arrangement of the TW26 bike.

Cam comparo

The TW26 just doesn't look good with the TC96 based on this and one other report that I saw. The HD255 is better, but produces less TQ in the critical 2700-3200 RPM range, passing the stock cam at 3200 and peaking at 3700. The key to the stock bike's smooth curve is the Jackpot mufflers with special dyno-tuned baffles, which produces very smooth low-end TQ above 90 lb/ft from 2700-4300 RPM's, holding its peak at 94 lb/ft from 3000 to about 3700. HP is 78, but this was predictably surpassed by both bikes with aftermarket cams. It really depends on what you want, low-end TQ or peak HP. For my type of riding I'll take the low-end hands down.

I would like to see a chart for a TC96 with TW21 installed. It is a very mild cam and likely won't hurt the low-end much, but since it is mild may not affect peak HP that much either.

Now, the Jackpot mufflers and properly tuned HD255 or TW21 might be a good combo, but we won't know 'til we see a chart. Since the HD255 chart was for a bike with a 2-into-1 installed I doubt if there would be much difference, as the Jackpot mufflers with stock head pipes emulate a 2-into-1 in performance.

I have no plans on camming my bike at this time since I'm happy with the present setup (Rush with Fuel Moto custom baffles [same as Jackpot], PCIII, and AC). I'm still watching, though, for that perfect combo that still hasn't surfaced.

I like my 26G's, especially with 3:37 gearing. It pulls like a freight train.

Check out the Head Quarters site for dyno sheets on the HQ34. It is a great bolt in cam.
