Don't listen to that salesman. I wouldn't buy a HD without ABS. I started a post on ABS and you should read it. Regardless of the whole ABS cost thing it will save your hide.
XTrooper3936 knows what he is talking about, listen to the wise and learn. My wife and I both have ABS on our SG's and it works. Especially when it's wet.
Get ABS!!! Look on you tube for Harley ABS and you'll realize it's a pittance what you pay for the stability in wet or dry conditions. It's a no brainer.
I did a real life test of ABS while in Sturgis, riding a demo Ultra in Rapid City.
First test: Rear only, 55mph Result: Absolute stability, no sign of lockup
Second test: Front/Rear, 65mph Result: Absolute stability, no sign of lockup
Third test: Front only, 35mph (yeah, crazy!) Result: VERY minimal wobble on front, but stable enough to stop, no lockup.
I did these tests to really see what ABS will do for a bike. Yeah, it was probably dumb to do a front only @ 35mph (especially after my 04/25/08 episode), but I had to try the ABS.
My opinion (for what it's worth): ABS @ $795.00 is worth saving your butt when some CAGER doesn't see you or slams on the brakes to stop for a kitty-cat and you need to react quickly!!!
Spend the money! Besides, it will be worth more on the bike when you sell it down the road!
