Actually if you are not using a Tier-1 gas they don't have enough additives to keep the system clean and not all "brand name" companies are Tire-1. Unfortunately the performance deteriorates so slowly that you don't notice it. Techron in the bottle you get at Auto Zone is the same additive Chevron uses and is one of the best, just read the label and put in the right number of ounces based on the size of your gas tank.
I found this out clearly this spring on the wife's 250 Rebel carbed bike. After winter storage the bike wouldn't idle. I even drained the tank and put fresh gas in, but still had to run with the choke half on or the bike would shut down. Thought I was going to have to take it in for service, but added an ounce or 2 of Techron to the tank and by the time I had burned half the tank everything was working perfect again. Was also told by the mechanic that works on my 2000 Xterra recommended I run the Techron in it at least once a year since most of the gas in my area didn't have the additives needed to keep the system clean.
At a recent H.O.G. meeting the local HD service manager presented a comparison of the amount of detergent in various premium fuels. Cheveron had the most. Shell V Power was next best but only that of Cheveron. And at a local truck stop (I think he said "76" brand) absolutely zero, zip and notta!

im not much on additives, but techron really works... several times, ive had a bit of sluggish performance on various bikes and after about a hundred miles with techron, it would clear up...
