Question Passing Lamp Install on Road King

I'm thinking about installing the aux. light lit and relocating my turn signals from the handlebars (since the dealer wants $350 to do it!) Can anyone offer any tips/hints and areas to look out for? Thanks.

I've thought about this too. I really like the look with the passing lamps on. Is it true that all of the wiring and everything is already right there and all you have to do is attach the lamps and bar? I know the RK Custom still has the aux switches, so it may be an easy job.

PS - My turn signals have already been relocated to the forks, so it may be a real simple thing for me to do. Not sure.

Sgt,

I haven't asked the dealer but do you know if the bullet turn signals can be used when I relocate them to the aux light bracket or do I have to buy new ones? I'm planning to get the dealer to print the installation instructions plus I have the shop manual. Then I'll decide if I'm going to tackle the job myself.

Also, I'm trying to shrink my "signature" photo so it displays in the forum rather than a link to the photo. The pic use to show up until the forum changed formats. Any help would be appreciated

Does not the RK have a light bar attached to the forks with the turn signals under them? Like a Ultra? I have a 2001 RK with them on. I am working on converting mine over to headlights (different mounting) and installing new lens's. I am than going to install HID bulbs w/halogin bulbs. I am going to put on a modulator and modulate the lights during the daytime. The HID headlight will be turned off during the day and has no halogen bulb and works either Hi or lo in HID. At night the photo cell disables the modulators so at night the hi-beam on will work on halogen (side headlights only). The HID headlight will be on and work as normal. The HID's on all 3 lights will work on low beam. I can switch the side headlights to be HID on either lo or Hi beam selector switch. I will take photos in a few weeks on a golf course at night for viewing. We shall see. Remember all three of the lens's are now headlights, not spotlights. The side 4 1/2" headlights also can be turned off at will also.

IIRC, your current turn signals won't work with the custom aux light bracket--your turn signals have and use a threaded post that's an integral part of the turn signal to mount, but the ones for the light bracket don't use or have the threaded post.

Good luck with your project.

Well, it's done! It wasn't that bad. Especially when the dealer quoted $340 for labor...ouch! It was time consuming and required plenty of wiring. I went ahead and soldered all the connections. (I hate crimp-on stuff) I managed to locate the switched connector inside the nacelle thanks to my O.E shop manual's schematics.

Pics will be uploaded to my album as soon as I finally get around to taking some.
