We went specifically looking at the RG , but came real close to getting an Ultra .. In the end I couldnt pull myself away from the RG .. Knew what to expect I guess .. Not that we would have been disappointed with the Ultra ..
But like one of the other posts said , if all ya need is the TourPak , get the RG , mine has the permanenet mount , but you can get a detachable mount where it can be taken off real quickly .. And the RG you will defintely need to change the seat , especially for Sweetie , the passenger pillion is only 11" wide ..
If ya want all the bells and whistles , go with the UC from the start .. You wont be disappointed either way ..
I'd recommend a test ride and see which is best for you.
My bike was in for service can they gave me a Road Glide to ride. I couldn't wait to get my UC back. The RG was horrible with the buffeting and no lowers. I got caught in rain and was soaked whereas with the UC the lowers protect your feet and legs. I also did not like the fairing way out in front of me like that. It was a stretch to reach the radio and see the gauges.
Wanted RG bought Ultra, tour pack is great, wife approves of bike, that's big right there. The real HD experts say RG is lower, faster, safer, and handles better than Ultra.I asked a million people. My inseam is only 30".Walking the Ultra and awkward stop signs can give an ol guy trouble, mine does.If yur 6' buy the Ultra,if not,RG+TP.
I have a RG with detachable tp and lowers with installed vents. I love it, I can ride 4-600 miles in all kinds of weather and at the end of the day my buds with batwings are dead tired. My only complaint is with the stock w/s and lowers it is too friggen hot (exh changed) in the rain I stay dry as a bone. Sure there is some buffeting but more so with the lower w/s, but hey this is motorcycling. I get less blown around on this bike than I did with my Softail with a w/s. and as far as an intercom, who wants to talk with the wife while riding? I gave up cb's when I gave up 18 wheelers.
Well.....I guess I asked for it. Now I'm really confused. I've had the luxery of riding my brothers 07 Ultra, so I guess I will have to find me a RG to ride. I think the tour pack and lowers are a must. I have gotten used to having CB on my other bikes so we could communicate during our trips. If I go with the RG I might put the J&M com system on it. Right now I am excited about owning either one. Thanks very much for all the advice.
sorry, but this is complete bull****... I regularly ride 800 plus mile days on my Ultra and it does not wear me out or make me dead tired. I think your buds are pussies....

just my opinion,

Being 5'7 I agree with the Ultra being tricky and awkward at low speeds/stop signs. Especially with a passenger, loaded down and with a TBAG too. The weight is to the rear and upwards. Any wiggling or movement from the back tweaks the front end at slow speeds. I am not ashamed to admit that at my height and probably age the Ultra is a pinch more bike then I feel 100% comfortable with when loaded down and a passenger. It is what it is. By myself and no loads, no problem. Since it is a fairly recent purchase I am hoping with time on the road I will overcome the minor but present issue.
It has nothing to do with not being able to touch the ground with both feet. My feet are both flat on the ground and knees bent. Its the rearward and upward distribution of the weight from a hefty passenger and loaded tour pack and TBAG.
I LOVE my roadglide , im 6'6'' 280 lbs . and the fit is just great , with the faring being out in front further make you feel like you have a lot more room ,
