Nothing wrong with financing but if you expect to be paying 300 a month for 72 months your looking at a 22k road king!!! Thats ridiculous!! The less months you finance the better the interest is. Me personally I threw down a few thousand and then I traded in my nightster which was more down after my balance was offset and even then I am making double payments so that way its like paying one months payment interest free every month I pay a payment with interest. I'm not going to brag like other people who say they pay cash money....... power to them but I'm not a broke *** either. I can easily afford double payments yet if I were ever to get into a tight spot the worst that will happen is I send Harley a single payment............ ohhhh boo hoo! haha. By the way if you have the credit you could always re finance down the road with your bank and get a killer low apr. Some times re financing hurts your credit but with some banks it won't and heres a hint for ya, October is usually the best time to take out a loan because all the car companies new models come out and interest rates are lower, at that time banks need to compete so they lower their rates and bingo bango you re finance with a damn good rate.
Do yourself a favor and google a financing rate calculator. Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT GO INTO THE DEALER TELLING THEM YOU WANT TO SPEND A CERTAIN AMOUNT PER MONTH. They will make you fall in love with a bike and push you up to $349 per month even if the price of the bike allows you to have a payment lower. A common tactic is to show you a low price but then there is a high interest rate in which the dealer gets a piece of the action. Know what rate you qualify for before you go in. YOU NEED EVERY PART OF THE EQUATION = PRICE AND RATE
Personally I agree with BlueFLHT and do not finance non essential items but if you must do some research on interest rates. Then you can calculate your monthly payments by the amount you plan on spending on the new bike minus any deposit. Send me a PM and I would be happy to assist. I hate seeing people get hosed.
Summary
-Pick a bike
-Estimate Cost including taxes
-Estimate interest rate- How is your credit score?
-Calculate your deposit - I hate to tell you this but if you do not have 25% to put down I would not be a buyer until you did. Basically in my opinion if you do not have $4K saved up you should not be looking to finance anything.
- Find an online payment calculator (They are everywhere) and figure your monthly payment
- I suggest looking at an ammorization chart too. This will show you how much money you will save by having a lower interest rate or larger down payment
- I am not sure where you live but unless you can ride all winter maybe you are better off waiting until Feb / Mar in the middle of winter. Why make payments for 6 months if you cannot ride it. Not to mention dealers will be more anxious to knock off some green.
Good Luck

i used to sell cars for a few years, so i know how they screw you. i dont have the cash to buy it outright, mainly because i have a 2 year old son. so i have to finance my toys. i have a sportbike that i bought almost a year ago, and i make double payments on it to keep from being upside down. and last month, i made 8x my payment at once. so i know how you get screwed with financing.
i was looking at a 72 month loan to keep things cheap in case something happened and i couldnt make a bigger payment. i was estimating 7.99% x 72mos.= 300 for 17,000 dollars. i know the base price before freight is 16,999. what i was basically wondering is if this sounds doable? or if they tack on freight, taxes, blah blah blah without negotiation? i was hoping that someone here had some advice on how they scored a sweet deal, or if all of you got screwed when you bought and financed your bikes.
if i cant feel good about the deal, i dont care how much i like the bike- i wont buy it. thanks to everyone who has replied. ive learned alot about HD's since i started lurking a few months ago. time to get rid of my sportbike... too many tickets!
