Default Tires on '07 Ultra?

Took the Ultra in for the 10K service today, and I'm pretty sure it needs a rear tire, it's starting to feel a little slippery back there, and looks pretty worn. The front "looks" OK, definitely in better shape than the rear. They are Metzeler 880s with ~10k miles on them, so I'm probably just going to bite the bullet & replace both of them.

Question is while I was happy with the Metzelers, they never really "wowed" me compared to the stock Dunlops. They were definitely better at not following road snakes, etc., and definitely served me well, but I'm wondering if there is a better tire out there? I ride primarily solo on the highway to/from work (85 miles each way) but on the weekends my wife and I like to go for a ride whenever we can get a babysitter, and neither one of us are small people.

The top 3 as I understand it are the Avon, Metzelers, and Michelins - the service writer told me the Michelin's are "pretty good", but how much of that is the MoCo Kool Aid? I'll spend the $$, those tires are the only thing touching the road, and if I have to spend a few extra bucks to keep it that way, then I will.

Thanks.

I've got Dunlop Elite III's, and they're pretty darn good. Got about 12,500 out of the rear, and still going on the front. But I ride em pretty hard. I do watch the air very close though, and I think that helps. You can get some screamin' deals on tires over the internet. You can get both these (front and rear) shipped to your door for less than $200. Shop around. I go through a lot of tires, so getting a deal is important to me. Oh, Ron Ayers.com or J&P Cycles, and some place in Arizona as best I can recall. All good deals, and free shipping if you get two. J&P free if over $100. The rear is just a couple of bucks over $100, so there you go.

I am going to try the Michelins on the next tire change. I only got 7000 out of the Metzler rear, 12,000 on the orginal Dunlop rear.

E-III Vote from me, always used Dunlop 402s the E-III switch was what I needed, directional control improved, the road snakes are no concern to me now (unless they are fresh or are wet with rain) I always ride 2up and faster than I should on corners.
