Default Texas Ride

I’m hoping some of you Texas riders can help me out with a ride plan. My wife and I have been riding for quite some time. Our long time friends decided they would like to start riding also. So they took the riders edge course and bought two bikes, an 883 sportster and a 750 Honda to gain some riding experience. They have now been riding for a little over a year. They would like to start tour riding and of course they need a bigger bike. His wife does not want to ride the front seat, she wants to sit back and enjoy the ride from the back seat. Anyway they have never been on a trip so I advised before taking the plunge they rent a bike and we’ll head out for a weekend ride and see how they both like it. They live in Houston and I live in SW Louisiana, so they would rent a bike out of Houston. I would like to keep the ride around 350 miles a day for the first trip and of course it’s only two days. So I told you all of that to ask you this.

Leaving Houston I would like to ride into the Texas hill country possibly somewhere around Austin. What are some good routes to ride in this area? I’ve heard of a loop that some people call twin sisters, but I’m not sure where that is. Does anyone know of a great route that would be very scenic and fun to ride to get our future tour riders on the road?

Another good trip is to go to Cooper's BBQ in Llano. Take 1431 east from Round Rock to Marble Falls. It's a great road, with lots of hills and twisties. Go north on 281 a bit, then turn left on Park Road 4. A few miles down the road, the geography suddenly changes from limestone to red granite. It's an amazing site. The road curves around through Inks Lake park, the ends at HWY 29. Go left for about 30 miles to some of the best BBQ around. Lots of different ways to get back to Austin, check the map. Depending on which route you take, it's about 200 - 250 round trip.

Hey bob when was the last time you went to Coopers? Most of the guys I ride with won't stop there anymore. They didn't even make the top 50 of Texas Monthly's BBQ round up.......

that is a great ride though. Do it while you can. 1431 is under construction and alot of those curves are getting straightened out.

I don't have a lot of faith in TM when it comes to BBQ reviews. Snow's is most definitely not the best around. It's not bad, but not great either. Cooper's has a good cowboy pork chop, and the never ending bean pot always helps to warm the seat up on the way home, if you know what I mean. I agree that the brisket can be hit or miss, and they don't have beef ribs, so how the hell can they call themseves a BBQ joint!

But all in all, it ain't a bad ride, and I'm never sorry I went there when I get home.

Have you tried Opie's in Spicewood? Supposedly the pit boss worked at Cooper's for years, but I haven't confirmed that rumor.

Cooper's aint bad, but there are some better. Nev, If no one has mentioned before, when riding the "sisters" watch out for deer. The little *&*&^% are everywhere, and the love to dart out in front of you! Just pay attention and everything is cool.

Kerrville has some good eating spots and if you make it down to Leaky, try to stay at the D'rose Inn. It's a very biker friendly place to stay.
