Default Trading in every 2 year or so Question

I have a friend you religiously trades his bike in every 2 years or so. He says he likes being on a new bike. His trade in usually has very few miles on it, probably around the 10k mark.

He just did his first big service on his 07 RK and it was somewhere around the 1000.00 mark for everything he did.

Now here is the question I have, if you where like him and trading in every 2 years (we are in canada so we can only ride about 5 months a year) why would you do anything to the bike, and i mean anything, why even change the oil, just ride it, its under warranty if something breaks, and the mileage you would put on would not be enough to really damage the motor, but why care anyway, you are trading it in....just a thought, you could save a bunch of money on service...

Because you don't want to be an *** and ruin the bike for the next person in line? Not doing a first oil change can ruin the bike after a while because of all the metal shavings that will be floating around in there. However, why get the service done at the dealer? An indy shop will charge you much less for the same service. It's not like HD requires you to have service done at a dealer.

$1,000 for a service? What in the f___ did they do? Must have put new tires on it and a new battery too.

and Dang,,,that's 937.00 US Dollars - that's a pretty expensive service... I'm no wrench, and I can't recall all three of my Ultra's services tallying to much more than that (1K, 5K and 10K) including the new rear tire.

Sigh, EVERYTHING is more expensive up here. Shop rates are typically higher, as are parts and supplies (outrageously so).

Guys, In not sure exactly what was done to his bike, hence the high cost of his service. This question had come up between another friend and me, we both ride Evo models. His a 89 Ultra and me 98 RG. We both do our own service, both like the bikes we ride.

We got talking about getting new bikes and the real question was "WHY". If we both like the bikes we have now, what is the benefit of getting a new one. We both are quite capable of rebuilding anything on the ones we have now. Both can run at high hi-way speeds, both are comfortable.

Like I said at the beginning of this thread, this was another friend who is not mechanically inclined, who relies on the dealer for all work needed and who just wants to have a new bike every 2 years. (Also being in Canada our riding season is a lot shorter then most).

I agree about it being wrong doing nothing, but really, if you are not keeping it and its going back to the stealer anyway... why would you care? Just wondering out loud.
