Did a dumb thing and rode off without key--question?
I rode off on a short run today without my key on my 08 Electra Glide classic. When I started it up, the key was close enough that it started. When I got to where I was going, it of coarse wouldn't start.
I thought that when you punched in your security code, it would allow you to start it?? But after I got the code punched in it wouldn't do anything. Again, it was my understanding that if your key ever went dead, you could override it and start it up. Am I wrong, or is there something you do AFTER you punch in the code that I didn't do right?
never forgot the key yet but have gone to the gas station without it. I just punch in the code and ride. I also have a blank barrel key in my bag for the gas cap. that will cost you $1 and will save you in a pinch.
The first day I go my Harley I rode off with the Key still in the ignition. I know I'm an idiot but for some reason I was thinking like my Kawaski was with the real key that had to stay in. Oh well a $65 lesson learn but I got my name in the computer system at the local harley dealership. Whoooooo
I programmed mine and practiced this procedure several times this weekend. Last week, I had a nightmare that I went to Thunder Beach and left my key at home. I've been paranoid ever since.
Did you follow the procedure correctly? You have to make sure to hit both turn signals at the same time within two seconds of turning the bike on. After that, you should be able to enter your digits incrementally with the left turn signal switch, then set that digit and advance to the next digit with the right turn signal switch. If I follow this procedure, when all five of my digits are filled in on my odometer, my security system is bypassed and I can start my bike. I'm sure that you've had the owner's manual out and verified your procedure by now. If you follow all of the directions and it doesn't start, I would imagine that you have a software problem. Time to take it to the shop.

Did that myself one time on I-10 near Houston but didnt lose the key. Had just left and for about 5 miles looked at that key more than once.
Said to self, Oh **** and gently grabbed it and put in my pocket.
I take it you forgot the FOB and the key or is the HFSSS in the key on the fancy bikes? If you tripped the alarm (flashing turn signals) don't you have to wait 10-minutes before entering the password? Gotta run the kids to school so can't get my notes. Good idea to practice entering the security code so it's second nature!
