Default 09 cold start problem

When starting cold, my 09 ultra idles back and forth betweeen maybe 1,800 RMP down to maybe 400, and often dies. After about 30 seconds it finally stabalizes better. The dealer said this is an issue but no fix is availble from factory since there is no error code. It may take an ECM update. For now, he has no solution. Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any info? Still very happy with the bike, just looking for any news on a fix.

I have an 09 Ultra and no problems here on cold starts. I do notice the RPMs go as high as 1200, stays there for about 30 to 45 seconds. When the engine warms up after 3 to 5 minutes, she stays at 1000 RPM with no problems.

What is your local termperature? Our local temps here is currently in the low 70s.

Geez, I hate hearing that. Hope they get you fixed up soon. 99% of the feedback on the '09's has been positive. It's shame to lay out that kind of dough and then have the MOCO tell you they don't have a fix. I'd be making some calls to the zone rep. I don't know what zone you're in but here's a number that saved me a ton of time and trouble. 414-343-4056 Not sure if it's still good. But it's MOCO rep that intervened on some problems I was having with the Custom Paint folks at MOCO. It's worth a try. Good Luck

My 09 did the same thing, only all the time, not only when cold. No errors. They first repalced the fuel pressure regulator and it did not help. They then replaced the fuel canister due to a unseen hairline crack and it has run perfect ever since. I would suggest they change your fuel canister as well as this was an issue on some 08's and is apparently still an issue. Either way your dealer is wrong, it is NOT normal. Good luck.

Thanks, the phone number may come in handy. Been really happy with 09... just need to get this issue worked out. Once it is up to temp, all is well. Just a pain when it decides to die. The temp here is still fairly warm (80's). While the dealer doesn't know a solution, I was pleased to at least hear them say there was a wider problem (rather than "it's only your bike")

If anyone finds a solution on this (if it is a wider problem), please post it. Thanks.

Sounds like a fuel canister issue to me. Take it in and tell em to change it.
