Default wind shield threaded inserts

fyi
just replaced 1 of my inserts with the new threaded style. i ran a 3/8" tap in first to help it get started ,but, i should have used a bottoming tap because as i ran out on threads the tabs on the new insert snapped off. befor i replace the other 2 im off to get a bottoming tap

Bottom tap is the way to go...If I'm not mistaken though the inserts should be installed so that the slotted side goes in first. That's the way I did it anyway. After I tapped the holes, I threaded the brass inserts on to the bolts and used them to install the new inserts.

That is correct. The slotted end goes in first to aid in thread cutting, although a bottom tap makes the process a lot easier. thread the insert on to a 1/4-20 bolt with a lock nut to install. Use a drop of red loctite or super glue on the outer threads of the brass insert.

The slotted end definitly goes in first, lock tight should not be used on plastic because it will destroy it. Once the inserts are installed they won't back out and are a great fix.

Hmmmm... seems to me that the slotted end would be for the screwdriver, otherwise, what purpose would they serve?

The part number for the new inserts is 16585-96. The slots are not made for a screw driver. The slots go into the fairing. There is no need to use a tap first. Lock tite will have a bad effect on the plastic.

In the grand scheme a tap isn't truly needed. It's just one of those tools that make the job at hand easier to deal with. Tapping the hole first relieves the amount of torque you would otherwise place on the mounts. Being that they are plastic, they will snap off and then you have new problem to deal with ;-)
