Default front wheel removal

I am trying to take off the front wheel. I took the brake calipers off and the two nuts under the right fork. I can't get the axle to budge. The bike is up on the lift. Should I lower it to get it started?

Thanks

Back off on the nut on the left side. Take the weight of the wheel off the axle (lower it a tad so the wheel just touches the deck) strike the right side of the axle with a dowell, soft blow mallet or...
Should slide out.

Thanks Master Chief,

Figured it out. I didn't back off the nut.

1. Reinstall the axle holder/nuts on the right side that you removed, but don't tighten.

2. Insert screwdriver or rod through axle on right side, hold axle stationary, remove axle nut, lock washer and flat washer on left side.

3. Use soft mallet and tap axle toward right side and catch spacers as they fall out; pull axle from hub.

4. Assuming you plan to reinstall the wheel and spacers. The notched spacer goes on the left side with the notches facing the wheel hub; the right side spacer is not side specific. Use anti-seize on the axle.

5. When the weel is reinstalled. the axle nut is torqued to 50-55 ft. lbs.

6. The axle holder nuts are torqued to 132-180 in-lbs.

7. Buy the HD Service Manual and read it before starting work.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks again

I have the service manual, but it doesn't any good if I don't read the instruction thoroughly.

I have edited my original post to reflect that it is not enough to buy the manual, it also needs to be read.

Ahhhhhh, reading the manual. What a concept. Just kidding guy.

Even though you might read a how to in the SM, you will still need to come here for clarification sometimes.

What's really scary is that there are people riding around out there that put the wheel on all by themselves after they had to ask how to take it off in the first place. Pray for these people.

The service manual is a great thing to have but I think it assumes you have some mechanical ability. It's NOT HD for “Dummies”. I mean the book not the person.
