Daughter & I used a Motocomm ST-1 for our 2-up trip to Sturgis this summer. $160 for both helmets & it worked fine. Full duplex intercomm and input for various devices including iPod. Got about 2 days from a pair of AA batteries.
I have an Autocom and I am very pleased with the sound quality for the intercom and navigation prompts from my Zumo 550. We're both wearing three-quarter helmets, and do not have trouble hearing each other.
Unfortunately, the sound quality for music (XM Radio from the Zumo) is very tinny. The earphone speakers don't do a very good job on music.
If you buy and install your own headsets the position of the speakers is very critical, they need to be directly over your ear and very close to the ear, having them a little high our too far out from the ear reduces the sound quality a lot. I have the J&M headsets in 2 helmets and both are very good, but please note you are not going to get much base through those little headset speakers.

I have to agee with Windup08. I had the Cardo set in my 3/4 HD helmet and the sound got washed out by wind noise above 60 mph. I removed the speakers and added 1/4 inch high density foam behind the speaker and reduced the wind noise to almost nothing. Now everthing comes in loud and clear.
I contacted John at J&M with a bunch of noob questions and he was unbelievable...replying to all my emails almost immediately Over the WEEKEND! He finally just told me to send my helmet to him and he would take care of it. Holy Smokes, that's great customer service! I know this doesn't answer the original question of "which is best", but I know where my money is going...
Hard for me to add much more to this thread that has not already been said, just let me say that there is a VERY significant difference between the J&M headsets and all the rest, including the Harley brand ,,,,,
