Do it yourself.
4 qts of SYN3 + Super Premium filter............$60. Takes about 20 minutes if it's your first time. (Good idea to have a buddy show you the little tricks that make it easy). Your owners manual also shows you how. If you think the dealer is going to do any more than that, you are only kidding yourself.
I agree. Just did the 5000 mile service on both my bikes and it was great learning about the bike while I did them. Harleys are actually very easy to work on. If you are planning on keeping the bike for the long term it's worth investing in the jacks/tools/manual to do it yourself.
Bought the manual for $60, got a Harley mechanic (friend) walk me through the service and now I'll be doing all my service.... well, basic service. I paid $270 for the 1k service, that ain't gonna happen again.
$289 for Syn in all 3 holes at Mile High in Denver. Great thing is they give you a free loaner for all your services, so I rode a vrod for 3 days. Not my favorite bike but was fun to try something different.
I don't have my owner's or service manual handy but I am pretty sure there is no 5,k service recommended. It is just fluids. I know that dealers post the 5,k in their service departments but it is not recommend the the Motor Company, if memory serves. I think the recommended services are 1,k and every 10,k.
Mine has a 5k service. Mainly check this and that, engine oil and filter change. They don't recommend the tranny or primary, but I did mine anyway, while I was crawling around on the ground. :-) The only confusing part of the recommended service was the adjustment of the clutch, and it's easy after you see it done. The adjustment of the rear wheel, drive belt, seems a little confusing also.... but mine was ok, so I didn't adjust it... next time....

I never have the stealership do anything that I can't do. One time in 1988 I had them change the inner primary seal on my 1987 FXSTC. My '03 does not know what the inside of shop looks like.
