Hello,

I have a 2007 fat boy and am planning on getting a touring bike. I like the street glide for it's stripped down look but also like the ultra for it's conveniences (lots of storage). I was thinking of getting the street glide and adding a detachable tour pak when i needed the storage. I am not sure how many long trips i will be taking but this bike will be a daily rider. I was hoping to post here and pick some of your brains and get some advice from folks with experience in the touring class. Thanks in advance.

I would make a list of what you want such as cruise control, radio, CB and such. Then you can compare the models and see what it would cost to upgrade what ever bike to meet your wants.

You might just consider the Standard, or the Classic as well, that's an option that might save you some $$. You can't go wrong with any of the Touring Family. Just have to define your requirements.

My Street Glide is a daily rider, to & from work every day and I have no complaints regarding it's ability to satisfy my needs, last bagger I had was a Roadking and I must admit I love my fairing & stereo. I will add a detachable tour pack one day if I need it for a trip but don't feel I'll ever need more than that..... well except for the 21" front wheel, 107" motor, stereo upgrade, etc.
The jump from a Fatboy to a Street Glide is not nearly the leap you would take to an Ultra. Just remember, the Ultra wins in the long distance dept if that's what your really after.

As much as I love my Road King, I was going to up to a Road Glide.(the street glide came out 3 months after I bought mine). Wife Loves the bike and has sentimental attachment to it, so i'm keeping it. I think I will go the route BigskyHD did and add an after market fairing. I would suggest the Glide if you do a lot of Highway/Long trip riding, and the Street Glide if you mostly stick to around town and short trips.

Cheers,

BCC

If you're considering 2-up riding at all, you're going to need a different seat as well as the tour-pak for that Street Glide. And if you want an intercom or CB, that's even more $$$. You can't add all those items to a Street Glide for anywhere near what an Ultra would cost you. If you need all (or most of) the options, the Ultra is the best buy.

its much more cost-effective to make an ultra look like a SG than a SG into an ultra

You don't tell us where you live. The lower fairings can feel pretty good if you live in a colder climate or ride in the rain.

Great feedback so far. I probably won't be doing to many long trips. My main priority is having something with more creature comforts for daily commuting. I should have also mentioned I'm keeping the fatboy. The touring bike will be an addition to the garage. There is no way in the world I would get rid of it after all the time and money I have into it.

I agree with Bluesssman. I love my UC and all the creature comforts it offers. The storage is awesome, the tunes, seat, just overall ride. I can't see getting another bike for a long, long time. (Besides, the wife would never allow it )
