Had a Softail Custom before my first bagger. On my second bagger now and have no desire to back to a softail design. The harsher ride on the softail prevents me from taking long rides. The Road King is much better for touring. The Softail might be better if you're only interested in bar hopping or taking short rides.

Too funny, but I DO agree! Why would I want to downgrade? That wasn't meant to be a slam, you know what I mean....
What are you smokin'? A softail? Now if you're just riding 3-4 times a week, and never over a couple of hundred miles, then maybe. But come on Man, you're in the Touring Section here. That's like asking if ..... well never mind, I think you know what I'm saying. AND I'M NOT KNOCKING THE SOFTAILS. They're great bikes, with a specific purpose. I've logged tons of miles on em, and I love the look. They're just not Tourers and they're not made for the LONG HAUL, day after day after day, 12 hours per in the seat. Now I know I'm going get some heat, so come on and lay it on me... I've been in the saddle long enough to know the difference. Most everyone here has been through their own softail(s) and we all loved it at that stage of our riding history. Things change, and so do we. Maybe you haven't changed, and you're still wanting that Softie. That's fine. Great bike. Enjoy.

I always like to have a Softail in the line up.....but if I had to have just one bike....It would not be a Softail.
Why would you ask such a question....in what area do you think the Softail is superior to the FL models?

Had a 2001 Heritage Classic that I wasted time trying to convert to a touring bike. Added detachable tour pack... radio... etc. So glad I switched to an Ultra in 2004. Never going back. All depends on the riding you want to do. But for touring... the Softail was NQR as we say... Not Quite Right.
