Does anyone have the directions to HD# 53803-06 detachable backrest docking kit? I have the kit my friend gave me but he didn't have the directions. Not sure how it goes on.
Have a couple beers and just throw it together (that's what I did), the instructions don't help for **** anyway, when I did mine all they did was confuse me...you're better off without em!
You would be better off having one of your friends that already has the kit installed come by and copy the installation off his bike.
I agree... The HD directions really will confuse you even more.. If you have the backrest already it will really help.. If you don't get any help - I'll drop the bags on one side and take Photos for you tomorrow morning.. Drop me your E-Mail address and I'll send you the picts...
Havn't got the sissy bar yet. Maybe thats why I don't have those pieces. Thanks!
NP. While you're waiting for the parts, you can spend some time reading all the other threads on this subject. There are dozens. Most of them are bitching about the HD "distructions."
I would also suggest that you buy a set of billet aluminum mounts. I have them and they work very well.
Just installed this docking station yesterday. Bought the station (53803-06) new from the dealer. Took me between 2 and 3 hrs., including time to surf the net to find a set of instructions (hopefully w/ pics) better and more complete than what came with the docking station. I really did not need to know about the rear docking station for a detachable tour pack, but those instructions were included in mine. I had to proceed with missing pages which included figures 8 & 9 that were important for me to have seen. Not only were the instructions incomplete (pages 5 & 6 were missing), but the flat bar was not part of the docking station. Turns out, after reading this thread, that the flat connector bar comes with the upright. I bought my upright from the classifieds here, and it didn't come with the flat connector bar. WTF??? Would it be THAT much more trouble or cost for the MoCo to include EVERY part needed to complete the docking station, without assuming that one will buy/have the upright at the time of installation?
I did finally get the docking station assembled, and the upright seemed to work well, tight and secure, even without the flat connector bar.
One difference, after seeing how a buddy of mine mounted his, I mounted my rear bag connector between the docking station and the bag support bracket, instead of using a washer (as I did on the 2 top bolts). After trying different methods, I decided that I didn't want the bags sticking out any further than they already do, nor did I want any misalignment with the front bag mount. The combined thickness of the mounting plate and a washer behind it would have amounted to about 1/4" additional outward spacing of the rear bag mount. No thanks. JMO.
Took a ride w/ the wife yesterday, everything seemed to work okay. Nothing loose or falling off. She was pleased to have the backrest.
