I currently have a 00 Fat Boy and love it, but for long trips I want a touring bike, something that has better wind protection. I have an 05 Road Glide on order that should be here in a couple of weeks, I'm ordering the lower fairings as well. I live in Colorado and ride year round but the winter time gets chilly so I'm having second thoughts now as I want good wind protection. What is better the Road Glide or the Ultra? Any comments would be appreciated.
I have to differ with nmfxstc. The roadglide is a great vehicle and the lowers will make it a year round vehicle for you. He is right, the Ultra comes with it all and is also a great bike. I just love the fairing on the roadglide, and the handling with the frame mounted fairing is wonderful. I lie the chopped removable tourpak and you better go ahead and get cruise control installed at the shop.
I can't help you with your specific question, but would like to say go with your gut instinct. Also, welcome to the forum and you have a beautiful Fat Boy! Let us know what you decide.
Stoked, I live in Colorado also and own a 03 road glide. Not just because I have one but I like the way the glide handles in the wind and the roads we have here. As far as the lowers, I have a set of the after market fabric type that I can put on when I need them in about 5 min. I will give the you the brand name if you wish and the nice thing is they only cost 100 bucks. Best of luck making your decision. Ride safe
Thanks for all your comments, I share all of your thoughts which still leaves me confused. My gut is telling me to go ahead with the RG. I plan on customizing the engine with the 95" big bore, a 204 or 251 CAM (any suggestions there?) Rinehart dual exhaust, race tuner kit, maybe a SE six speed tranny, front & rear lowering kit and some added chrome. It shoud be a sweet bike, but not far off of the price of an 05 SE Electra Glide. Now it's really getting confusing. It's snowing now but suppose to clear up this weekend, if so I'll try to demo an Ultra for comparison.
Thanks again, and if anyone has any suggestions on which CAM is better, I'd like to hear from you. I want a balance of performance vs dependability and good gas mileage. Is the 6 speed necessary? On my Fat Boy I'm always looking for 1 more gear!
