As most experienced motorcycle riders know intersections are potential collision points for riders. My gal and I were coming up on an intersection last night in the car and I could see this teenager coming up on the right who was not slowing down for the stop sign she was approaching. As we see so often today, she was on the phone with a couple young passengers in the vehicle. I immediately slammed on the brakes as she drove right through the stop sign. She even had the gall to laugh as she glanced toward us as she went by. My gal said she didn't see her coming and asked how I knew she wasn't going to stop. My immediate thought was, with all the caution I use when up two wheels, I must transfer those characteristics to what ever I drive. The point is, you just can't be too careful and watch those intersections, there are some very careless people out there.
My wife just recently got her motorcycle license. As I follow her around I am constantly on her about the intersections. She is good about watching for traffic but she is too slow clearing the intersection and too slow getting out of the zone. I keep telling her that most of "us" (now she is one of us) get nailed in the intersection!
...you just can't be too careful and watch those intersections, there are some very careless people out there.
I was hit twice last year and both were at intersections. Fortunately I was in the car each time.
With that said, I'm watching our local (Atlanta, Georgia) news and they're reporting a car just t-boned a firetruck. All the other traffic stopped except this one. The car looks totaled and the firetruck will have to be towed.
Just tonight somone ran a stop sign not far from my house and caused a bad two car wreck. I've seen people run stops like they didn't know they were even there. Not only do I watch the intersections, I watch oncoming traffic too and have seen inatentive cagers start to cross the line. I can't stress enough taking an MSF course every other year to help keep your skills up to date. Learn how to use both of your brakes and learn how to countersteer around obstacles too. Joke all you want but that training pays off and has saved my *** a few times annually.
Ride safe....
Someday society will wake-up and start putting our own safety first and realize that
distractions in the car especially cell-phones should be outlawed, but I doubt that day
will ever come, ppl don't like to give up "rights", like the "right" to drive,<(sarcassim),
just keep working on the Karma points and hope you are lucky.
