Default Fairing Removal

Newbie to the site and just bought a 98 Ultra (only 10k miles on it). How do you remove the Fairing to adjust the handlebars?

There are seven screws on the inside of the fairing that have to come loose to split the inner and outer fairing. I think to get to the bar clamp you are also going to have to partially remove the radio, as it sets right over the clamp. Be sure to put good padding over the front fender so you don't ding it if you have an oops!

I would suggest you get a shop manual as it will give complete details on the proceedure, as well as anything else you might want to do to the bike, including tire changes, maintainance, belt adjustments, etc.

Regards,

Bill

Intimidated by a few screws? In a few months you'll be asking how to pull off the jugs to do a bore. It's an HD, easy to work on.

Welcome to the forum. You are going to find this place very helpful as there are a lot of experienced riders/mechanics here and they all offer great advice. Don't be intimidated by what you might want to replace or fix yourself. The mechanics at the dealer are just like you, they just do it everyday. They have to use the book just as you will, and believe me, the 60 bucks for the service manual is the best 60 bucks you will spend on your bike. You will save thousands by doing it yourself. There are only a few specialty tools that you might have to get from the dealer and beyond that...basic tools are all your going to need.

You might want to invest in a set off allen sockets and also torx sockets so you can use them on a torque wrench. Make sure you use lock-tite on all your bolts, blue for accessories and red for everything on the motor and you will never have harware falling off.

Good luck in your new adventures and we will see you in on the roads.....

Ride on!
