I would not pay for labor to install the IDS. Wait until you need a rear tire and have them install it. No additional time needed to bolt on the IDS. If they say so, thats is bull. At our shop we sell the IDS as an upgrade during your rr tire service with NO additional labor cost.
There's a little time involved: Press the bearing onto the sprocket and bolt the hub to the wheel. I'd be surprised if they charged nothing, but I wouldn't accept more than 1/2 hr. (minimum at my local shop) if the wheel is already off. Of course, the best way to deal with it is install your own tires and then add the IDS at the next opportunity.
Gutman, please forward my post to them if you like. While I know you cant catch all things on new releases esp the 07s with all the big changes made, testing on a closed course or in one zone like southern Fla missed a big complaint. Even before model was released to the public, some dealers at the pre release questioned the 5th gear noise and knew it would be something they would have to deal with. The whine never bothered me but the clatter did,and at the time who knew what was doing it or what it might lead to? I sat here and watched many other owners complain, state their thoughts, take the heat from others that had no noise, even sell their bikes over frustration that Hd failed to address.Probably these owners biggest complaint was what C/S and many dealers were telling these owners. This is what lit the fires! I wanted mine cured but not just mine alone. I wanted the bad rap that was being pinned to this new model erased.I offered my bike to HD for their testing since it was noisey one and would replicate the noise on any given day.No disrepect to you,or the men involved with mine, but HD missed it and that includes the testers.

It all comes down to a failure rate. How many failures have you incurred? How many of these people ride around at 40 mph in 6th? I am not here to argue the point, nor will I. I have seen in person the test facilities and testing, and from your last two post, it is obvious you have no idea what you are posting about. I sold over 100 of the touring models that year with no failures. The customers complaining about whine or clatter were in 6th gear at too low RPM. I am only posting what I know and not what I heard from this guy or that guy.
That didn't take long. Here is a couple responses for pittguy:
Roger,
If you would like, you can direct this guy to our HR department at Talladega or Arizona. We are always excepting resumes for durability riders and he could supply a resume and join our team. I have to let you know though that at 250 miles per shift rain, shine, storming, or cold. I can tell you stories about how people come and want to give there advice, but after about 2 weeks and their sore, we do not see them anymore.
I am not saying we are better or longer riders than them, but you and I have witnesses when I am ready to go somewhere, I am going and I usually get their pretty quick, even though I am not speeding. Saddle time is something you have to desire, and grow to love. Some just like to say they can do it everyday, but in the end are only really very good about talking about it.
Invite him to contact the Talladega Test Facility. I would love to see the reply.
That is funny. I like guys like this. I ride more miles a qtr than this guy does all year. If it is going to break, I'll break it. If it is a noise, I'll ride the engineers about it and let others know. If it makes noise and keeps running, I eat crow and apologize to them and keep riding. Some mechanical equipment will make noise, it is a moving part. I would like to see a photo of this guys bike and see how stock it is. I could probably make money on this bet.
Anyway thanks for standing up with us. It appears that others on this site are happy with our products also. We have come a long way in the past 5 years with the quality of our product. Thanks bro.
These guys are passionate about their work. Don't make claims you have absolutely no information of.
I had an 07 Ultra and had vibration problems. HD offered a $100.00 coupon to used for labor if you bought their "package specials". I bought the IDS for $245.00 from the dealer and the dealer installed it. It took 1 hour at $70.00 per hour rate. but I did not get any money back. They turned it into Harrley and got their money back from them.
Sidenote: They messed up the install and had to redo it about 8,000 miles later and got to throw in a new wheel. If I had it to do again, I would have spent the money on crome.
Bldr
Hey theres guys here that put alot of miles on their own machines and dont get paid for it.These guys put more miles on in a yr than I do,running a closed course isnt my idea of fun and it appears to be missing some problems that dealers like yourself have to deal with. You mean to tell me a leak never appeared on any CVOs? Scissored crank?Cam brg issues never appeared on the pre 07s? No one ever thought the 5th gear whine might be a issue the public wont like? Arizona must be a low heat cause EPA or not they missed that one too.Why did HD install the IDS on the 08s rather than leaving them as an owner buy upgrade?Hey even do the same on the 09s.They couldve sold the newer models cheaper and made a killing on the sell, the installs.Maybe they should start picking one of the test bikes off the assembly line after the bean counters cheapened them up. The public is getting tired of being the real world testers, using their money and having to put up with taking the bikes back for the repairs, sometimes more than once for the same squalk. I cant tell HD what to do,but some things I mentioned have been stated by others.
