mp customs. I'm not fully understanding what your problem is. I have a 1985 FLHTC as well with close to 100K miles on it, if you want to email me at hdvespa@yahoo.com. I'm sure I have had alot of the same isues you see. finger on opposite side breaking, shaft twisting, etc.. This past spring I finally upgrad to the ball and ramp set-up similiar to 86 and up. I changed the trap door on the transmission and actuator because I was tired of breaking parts.

What hdvespa said. Had 2 '86s, a Softail & an FXRD. Went thruogh many release forks, a coupla throwout bearings, several pivot shafts & one cable end mount (top of the trans case). Best fix is to replace the trap door & cover with the direct cable style from the '87 & later 5 speed. The external release arm was a carry over from the 4 speed dry clutch before they added the diaphram spring. Dont know how it held up then, but would usualy break the fork about 6-7000 miles. If you stay with the original set up, keep a spare fork, pivot shaft & cable end mount in your tool bag. Depending on your pipes, takes a bout 1/2 hr to change on the side of the road.
To lighten up the pull required to the left hand, does not reduce the force applied to the parts that break, get the AMP clutch assist. It works well. And start with all new parts especialy a well lubed cable.
