I'm planning to install a wire for a Battery Tender Jr. hookup. I would have rather been riding but since my driveway is ice and the roads are all salt I was puttering in the garage. I have a 2009 Ultra (w/ ABS & Security) and took the seat off it today. Along with the battery tender, I also have a service manual on my christmas list so I have a couple questions. On top of the battery looks like a plastic enclosed circuit board with what looks like 1 large wiring harness and two other small connections. I took the 2 bolts off and peeked under to see the battery but could not really raise it too far without disconnecting some wire harnesses. So my questions are...
1.) What is this plastic enclosed thing on top of the battery?
2.) Would there be any problem with removing the wiring harnesses from it? I'm just worried about loosing fuel injection settings or not being able to start it after because of a security system reset or something.
3.) Where did you attach your battery tender cable, to the battery or through the fuse box or elsewhere?
4.) Where do you have access to the Battery Tender connection, behind the engine, by the saddle bags, etc...?
cant help with the 09 stuff but up north many dealers install the pigtail on all there bikes. u can get the tail at walmart it has eyes to go directly to the battery and a plug in for the tender run it down the frame and wire tie it just above the oil cap.
I attached my battery tender wiring directly to the battery. The harness has it's own fuse. I changed the plugs to 1/4" audio plugs and have a bracket for the adjustable backrest that I mounted the female plug. The reason I went with the audio plugs is I use the same wiring for my heated cloths. I use a 90 degree male plug for my heated cloths and can plug in and unplug with one hand.

Thanks,

#1 It holds the ECM.
#2 No problem. There is a little lever on the connection to unlock it. Once unlocked, the connection will just lift out. After moving cable out of the way, the ECM will need to come off. Then there are two torx bolts toward the back that hold the plastic tray. Remove those and lift the tray out. This will give you enough room to access the battery terminals. I had no problem hooking mine up myself. I don't have an alarm though. Bike ran fine after. YMMV
#3 Directly to the battery. Black to ground - , Red to positive +... Um, this is important.
#4 I have mine tucked in just forward of the battery below the seat. When I need it to charge, I reach in there and pull it out and hook it up. When not in use I tuck it back in there. I like it in there because it doesn't rub on anything.
I'm interested in doing this as well, and I guess I was wrong. I thought when using a tender or any trickle, one had to remove all wires from the battery before tender use. That's what I did with a 4-wheeler. Can't say who told me that or where I heard it. Glad that's not the case!
If you install the pigtail for the Heated gear instead of the Battery tender, HD sells a six inch conversion plug so you can use the same pigtail for both. Thats what I did...I didn't want to install two pigtails
