Whats the chances that I plop down a ton of cash on an 06 SG or Electra and in 07 they introduce the 6 speed, cam tensioner etc to the touring line?. What would bum me out a little.

never happen. hd will let the dealers make the 6 speed money. if dyna sales were not down they would have never put it in.chain tensioners? go for the gear drives.

I'm not hot rodding or anything so I wonder if the gear driven cams would even be a necessity for me? Do they offer any performance and how much do they cost? As far as the 6 speed, If I really had an issue with highway gearing I guess I could just put on a bigger front pulley. Bountyhunter, how much for those TREX duals? nice....

I guess I'm talking myself into buying one now then...lol

The gear driven cam vs chain driven are good for an honest 4-6 hp just because of more accurate can timing. The biggest thing is the chain tensioner shoes coming apart and junking a motor. The seems to be no set mileage as when those shoes come apart, so you just have to keep an eye on them. I wouldn't worry as long as your bike is under warranty, but I think it would be a smart move to make after your warranty expires. Your looking at 1K for the cams, gear set and labor.
I know in the short time I've been riding my Road King, I've pulled in the clutch looking for another gear atleast a half dozen times while on the interstate. Iam talking the 85-90mph range, so I think theres a Baker 6 speed in my future

For the reasons you mention for NOT buying a 06 are the very Reasons I bought a 06. I for one DONOT want Major Changes in a model year the FIRST year they come out. The 5 speed in a time proven Tranny. I want the end of a model change, not the beginning. I bought a MARCH production EG. They finally got the 06s right and running late in the model year. I have 1000 miles and not ONE issue on this bike. Now, when the 07 come out in late July it will start all over again and the MORE major changes the more potential trouble. The dynas are case in point. 06, they had MAJOR changes and ALL have been re-called. Not to say it will happen every time ,but I'll be interested in a 6 speed and other major changes when they have been in production 5 or 6 years. until then I am VERY HAPPY with my 06 EG. Just my 02............. hdman
PS The EPA isn't making life any better for the MOCO either. They are having to do things to Harleys that otherwise they would NOT do....

I would buy now and I did! The EPA could be even worse with the 07's, so if you plan on doing mods to the bike, I think that I would be looking to get an 06.

I'm on the fence about the 6-speed tranny but I would welcome all the other changes made to the '06 Dynas for the '07 tourers. These changes go a long way in reducing maintenance costs and potential points of failures. For example:
[ul][*] elimination of all external oil lines[*] hydraulic cam chain tensioners[*] new oil pump assembly[*] automatic primary tensioner
[/ul]yada yada yada

I had an '06 FXDCI for a short time and yes, it had a few bugs - but those apparently have been worked out and I would think that within another model year or so, these changes would be fully baked and moved over to the tourers.

I'll be looking forward to the July dealer show. I don't think we'll see any major architectural changes to the Dyna line but I hope that we'll see some of the above changes made to the '07 tourers.

(For details of '06 changes made across the entire Harley/Buell line, check this out.)

I faced this last year at this time. I went ahead and bought the 05 RK. I have 11K on it and am so happy I bought it.

There is something new every year. One thing never gets old - riding my Harley Road King.

Just do it, then in 5 years you can do it again to pick up all the new bells and whistles you missed but didn't need.
