Has anyone had this happen to them? I have an 04 EGCUI and the volt meter is eratic at and above 2500 rpm, it will drop from 14V to 12V than go back to 14 for a minute than drop again to 12 for a few seconds. Below 2500rpm it is fine, so I don't think it is the voltage regulator. Any help would be appreciated.
Check your connections and don't forget the grounds. Double check the voltmeter with a multi-meter. If they connections and meter check out the test the voltage regulator and the alternator (stator output) as per the manual. Hope this helps.
I plan on checking all connections volt reg and alt. but what confused me was the fact that the problem only occured at certain rpms.
Thanks for the info though.
By the way the Marine Corps leads the way all the way
My FLHTCU/Trike had the same problem. Volts would bounce between 14v and 12v, then it started with the 14v to 10v jump. It would be OK for awhile then jump around again. Finally, it sat over night and it wouldn't start the next day. I returned it (three times) to HD dealer and they kept saying it was the chrome voltage regulator and replaced three regulators. They didn't want to hear what I had to say and didn't want my experience, 32 years, to air in their presence. Bottom line, it was a bad battery. Hope this helps.
Intermittent open in the charging circuit. If you don't find it anywhere else, check the output of the stator. The leads from the winding to the plug rub against the case & either go open or ground.
Thanks for all of the advise, this will be my weekend project. Wanted to go to the Motorcycle show in Long Beach, Ca. this week but getting the bike running right is more important or should I go and check out a new one, Hm.
Harmonics....
At certain RPM's the frequency of the vibrations are just right and the problem appears.
It's like when a singer shatters a crystal glass, the material has an inherent hramonic that when reached causes it's molecules to vibrate violently enough to disrupt it compositon.
I went through and checked everything for this problem and all tests were good, so I started thinking (dangerous most times), the problem is rpm related so I disconnected my pcIII and guess what no more problem, it's still under warranty so will have to contact Fuel Moto to see what we can do.
