Just my luck, the first time I use the intercom on my '06 Ultra and the headset cord separated from my helmet and the metal tip chipped the clearcoat on my gas tank. The paint appears untouched but the clearcoat chip is about 1/8" - 3/16". I plan on buying the touch-up kit from the dealer tomorrow and trying to repair it myself. This is the first I've attempted something like this so I'm looking for some tips. What's the best way to apply the paint / clearcoat so it's smooth? Should I sand it down afterwards with 2000 grit wet sand paper? Advice on using rubbing compound?
Also, does anyone have any tips for securing the intercom cable to the helmet connector so it doesn't pull apart in the future? I'm using the headset / intercom that came with the Ultra.
Believe it or not, but I remember reading this same thing happened to someone else on here in the last 30 days or so. Try the serch and you may find it. Seems like some people were giving him some good tips on how to fix it.
gsparesa, thanks for the info! Wow... I checked out your pics and the repair looks good. Where did you find the Meguiars Mirror Glaze 83? Is it a "finer grit" than polishing compound? How long did you wait between each paint / clearcoat application? Sorry for all the questions, I've just never tried this before and I'm a little nervous about screwing up the existing paint job.
You're right about the tension on the headset cord. I've been stretching out the cord to lengthen it. I did figure out a way to secure the cord to the helmet connector. I wrapped a black cable tie horizontally around the entire connector clamp / housing. Then, using the cable tie as an "anchor", I took one of my wife's black "pony tails" and attached it to the cable tie and wrapped the other end around the headset cable end. It's not tight enough to entirely prevent the cable from pulling out of the helmet connector, but it will keep it from banging around if it does disconnect. The pony tail is also elastic enough to slip the headset cable out if I need to. I know it sounds funny, but since it's all back you really don't notice it at all. It certainly doesn't look any worse than the clunky helmet connector does already.

I got the Mirror Glaze 83 at the local Auto refinishing store. You can use Meguiars Scratch X which gives great results. It will even cut a little faster than the Glaze 83.
