If you're looking for a straight "yes" or "no" answer, good luck.
Worth/value is subjective, and only YOU can decide after fact if the money you spent was worth the results your dollars produced.
Me personally? I'm glad the cams were included in the price I paid. But those were special circumstances that influenced my perception of the value.
Good point. What I am wondering, and I'm sure there are some good motor guys here, is the estimated HP and TQ that the 103 kit will produce with and without the cams. After I have that information, I can think it through.
Take a look at the dyno thread at the top of this section.

Can I ask you all, What's wrong with running a stock 96 engine right out of the factory ?. What's the real need to beef up the engine ?. Just to be Hardcore Tire-Kickers or what ?. No pun intended here...Just want to hear what you Guys have to say for your own reasons.
Thanks,
Thorey
Nothing wrong at all with running a stock motor if you are happy with the way it feels when you ride it. I like my scoot to be quick off the line and pass cars that are traveling the speed limit with a simple twist of the throttle.
I guess it all depends on if you like slow, quiet rides or if you like speed. To me it is like asking why an amusement park would put in a bigger, faster roller coaster when the old slow one will get you from where you get on the ride to where you get off it. Most of my past bikes were much faster than my current one. The adrenaline rush from the speed is one of the biggest reasons I ride a bike instead of a car.

Thorey, if you want to ride a fairly fast HD (non VRod), you have to spend some serious cabbage. If you just want to ride a fast motorcycle buy a used V Max or any of a multitude of used imports on the cheap. You could also buy a used already souped up HD. This is a smart option as the original buyer loses all he spent on the upgrades but you still get all the performance. BELIEVE me I know this to be true as I have spent stupid money on some of my previous HD's, my 05 Fatty was very fast but I got almost nothing for the crazy money I spent on performance and bling/paint. Won't do it again....maybe
Well, all I can say is I am doing it for more seat thrill. I raced honda 450's, jumped 60'tripples, ect.. so I am used to a little more than usual and when I open the throttle to pass a car I want it to respond faster. Hell, if I had money I would of went all the way and got a HQ120. But for now, I will have to settle for the 103. But my buddies tell me that I will like it just fine.
Took her in this morning for the engine work. I am realizing I might need some counseling though. I am pacing around the house, nervous and figity and getting on the wifes nerves. I feel like a family member is having surgery.

Thanks for this idea. I did take a look - wow there are a lot of posts. The dyno chart in the Harley catalog also has some good info. I am still not sure how much more hp and grunt the cams will provide. I could be fairly ok sinking $1,250 or so into a 103 upgrade. No can do if it is much more than that. I spent north of $4,000 on my last bike, a 2007 Fatty and as the previous poster said - that does not come back (becuase it didn't)
I would say the 103 kit isnt worth it esp w/o cams. A 96 incher with aftermarket cams may even outrun a 103 HD kit,HD cams of course... Spending the difference on head work would benefit the 96 incher even more..with a good tune on each builds. Its what you want, where you want the power increase, what you want to spend, still retain a so called warranty etc.

I would do cams but I have heard that will kill the warranty. I need that for the obligatory 2 years. After that no worries. Could also just go with fuel management, including a high flow A/C (already have the pipes) and be happy.
