Buying a woman a "practical" item that is in any way an appliance or might appear to be a self improvement "hint", as a gift, is a rookie mistake. You have to buy appliances as a couple, and self improvement stuff works better that way too. You can get both of you a gym membership, but not just her.
For most women, jewelry and clothing are always safer. If she is really sensitive, buy clothing that is too small and let her return it for her true size.
BTW, apparently buying her an oil cooler for "our" motorcycle isn't that good of a plan either...
