Default Check Engine Light?

I noticed this morning, do the nromal start-up turn switch on, wait for a 20 seconds or so for it to run thru what it does. Fire the bike up, after it runs for a few seconds the check engine light comes back on for about 5 seconds then goes back off. Any ideas here??? Bike seems to run fine. Does this mean something is stored in the ECM??

Thanks

Bob

I had the same thing happened to mine. I do not know what the problem was, maybe because I installed the PC3 but not sure. It tells you there is an error stored. After so many starts the error erases and the check engine does not go on again. For me it was probably like 30 starts the error went away.

Thanks Inforit

I called the dealer, and they told me that it may be a crank sensor code. Something about it kicks a code if the crank tries to turn the other way when you start the bike. They claim that when bikes kick a code that 80% of the time that is what it is for. Of course they can not look at it today either.

I've noticed that my bike does the same thing. It has only happened a couple of times, but then it goes right out. Another PCIII user

I have heard that if you shut down the bike WITHOUT using the kill switch everytime (rather then the fork lock) it can do this. Start using the kill switch (if you are not doing so) and see if it goes away after 30 or so starts... Just one of those things I picked up from a tech I know...

That is interesting, I never use the kill switch on the bike. Seem like someone told me not to, I just can not remember why they said not to use it.

HD,

You should always use the kill switch instead of your ignition switch. From my understanding, if you don't shut off the kill switch, your battery is still draining at the ignition switch after shut off. This theory was proven, when I left my HOG sat for about a week without starting it. I went to start it and the battery was very fresh, and started without any hesitation. That sold me!

Regarding the Check Engine light, this happens when the ECM logs an error. The light will come on for about five seconds, then goes away, and it will keep doing this until the dealer diagnoses and clears it from the ECM. It won't hurt the bike, but you should have it checked and the light cleared.

You can clear it yourself using the procedure published in the Electrical Diagnostics Manual for the 06 Touring line or the one published in the DIY section of the forum.

That the light goes back out shows that it is a historic code. It may be indicating a nuisense or something more serious. The exact code can be displayed on your odometer if you press and hold the reset button while turning the ignition on.

This works for 06 as well.

Ive had the same thing happen many times on my 03 RK. It throws a history code that the dealer can clear, or the numerous starts will also clear. I figured the problem with mine was sometimes my finger would slip off the start button early, and i would wait for the fuel pump again and then start it. Every time i "miss started" my check engine light would come on for 10 - 20 seconds after starting. The same problem happened to friends, and they also noted the same situations. My dealer got used to me coming in and they automatically grabbed the scanalyzer......
