Exhaust
It's going to sound stupid, so I'll attempt to be brief on an otherwise very long story...
(Insert very long story here) and then I finally wound up with a set of B&E Max 2's.
The Max 2's sound amazing - But they're quite loud.
(Insert another very long story here) and then I had this freakish idea - See, the B&E Max 2's are two different units -- The right muffler has a modified baffle and gives you the "clack-clack" sound, while the left muffler is sort of an open resonator.
So what I did was put my *stock* right side muffler on and the left (resonator) B&E Max 2 on.
Thrilled is an understatement - Pragmatically speaking. It's throaty and beefy enough (but not too much), loud enough when you twist it (but not so loud that you fear getting pulled over) and "rumbly" and crisp enough to be proud of your bike at a stop light.
One technicality I was concerned about - The normal 40%L / 60%R exhaust pressure was flopped about to probably 70%L / 30%R at idle (due to the almost open "resonator" of the Max 2 left muffler). I called my mechanic at the dealer and asked if it was going to be an issue (08 w/EFI) and he said that as long as it seems to be running well, it shouldn't be a problem. That concern vanished after a few tanks of gas when I realized that my rural mileage jumped from 42 to 47MPG... Two service calls (a 1k and a 5k) later and no complaints or notices from the mechanics.
Several kick-*** things here -- The B&E's are made from stock mufflers. The end on the Max 2's look completely stock (except I recall painting the end of either my stock muffler or the Max 2 with high-temp black paint to match the other one). If you wind up with certain officials that are writing people up without stock pipes, yours look stock. If they're writing up overly loud bikes, yours isn't unusually loud. And if you want to be rude for a weekend, it takes 10 minutes to put the right Max 2 on the bike.
Otherwise, you're getting a great sounding bike that non-bikers won't hate for $125.
The pleasant, low rumble at idle turns to an authoritative, slightly crispy, but just soft enough in the high end "bark" when that additional pressure builds with the throttle. It evens out perfectly on the highway so you can still "feel it" without making you crank up the stereo too much. And passengers can *talk* to me (SG with a 12" shield) without going hoarse.
All this begs the question - "Why didn't you just try the Max 1's" -- I did. That's part of one of those long stories above. Sounded like a Buick (it might have been louder than stock...) and had easily identified (visually) modified baffles. Two things I didn't want. And the Max 2's (as a set) were just too much. This was, IMO, a perfect compromise. And cheap. And looks 100% stock. And I think my "long story short" failed again...

I for one, didn't like the V&H Ovals or Rhineharts but that's what most everyone else was getting. I went with Rush 2.0 slash ups. I love how they sound and perform!
