Default cam change question

I am looking at going back to a gear drive set up in my 06 Ultra. Some of you might remember my post back in August "Broke halfway to Sturgis". Well I had a lifter take out my gear drive set up, oil pump and cam plate. The dealer in Souix Fall got me fixed up and back on the road but with a chain drive and S.E. 257's vs the S&S 585's that I had in. I only have a couple of thousand miles on this set up and the performance is different with these cams and would like the 585's back in. My question is how important is it to replace the inner and outer bearings after this short of time. If I have the dealer make the change I will have them press in new ones. I have been doing a bit of reading on this and I feel that I should be able to make the swap myself. However I do not have the bearing pullers or press to make the bearing change. And to make the purchase for these for one cam change doesn't really make sense. So what would you guys do?

You should change cam bearings EVERY time you change cams.
The wear pattern from cam to cam will be different.
New bearings allow for the new cam to set its own pattern instead of trying to cut a new pattern in a bearing already patterned by a different cam.

It's really simple to change the inner bearings with the right tool, and you can rent it inexpensively. E-mail me if you need to know where to rent tools -- I know a fella that does so cheaply and sends tools all over the country. Good luck.

Also, the job hours that a dealer would bill you for will be much higher than the cost of the tool...even if you bought it for a 1 time use.

But...go with Tater's rental advice.

Pay attention to what you're doing, be very thorough...you'll be fine.
Good Luck!

The tools I was looking at was a puller, press and the 2 oil pump alignment tools. I was under the impression these would be about $300 for all three?

I just ordered that direct from George's Garage. Puller, installer, and oil alignment screws. It was about $170. Now I can use them when ever and for as long as I like, plus I can only assume I may get a few beers off my buddies in the future when they make changes.
