I don't have to wear a helmet here in Pennsylvania, but I always do. I wear a HJC police-issue half helmet while my wife wears a H-D brand half helmet.
After one of my friends slid down the road on his face without a helmet after a bambi incident and then another sliding on his face with a full face helmet avoiding an accident with no face injuries, it's full face for me and the wife. Some are saying they only wear helmets when on the interstate. Most accidents happen within 3 miles from your home.
No law in IL, but I did just start wearing one of the carbon fiber http://www.carbonfiberhelmets.com/ 1/2's, it is pretty darn small, no mushroom head. Darn kids wanted me to quit smoking and wear a helmet, I think they want me to be around for awhile.
Always wear a 3/4 no matter where I ride. Ran into the back of a city bus many years ago. If I hadn't had a helmet on, I wouldn't be here writing this.

Wear a full face, but will be getting a 1/2 helmet to wear in Rally's and Parades.
Texas exempts riders 21 and over from wearing a helmet if they either have taken a Rider Course or have a minimum of $10k medical insurance. I meet both requirements, but will always wear a helmet while riding...just don't feel right w/o one.
