On my new 08 SG with ABS I just got done with the 1000 mile service(At 2000 miles, hey I was busy!!) and the rear rotor is cooked! It is rainbow colored clearly indicating overheat, it does not drag on its own nor do I ride with my foot on the rear brake pedal and I am not prone to overuse the rear as I have raced extensively both dirt and street so I know how to apply the brakes. My question is does any one think because of ABS the rear will be used to a higher degree than ever before because it is almost impossible to lock up? This may create a higher than anticipated temperature in the rear brake system because you can be so much more aggressive with the rear brake with ABS than without the ABS. If you have ridden one with ABS you know how hard you can hammer on the brakes and with all the posted problems about front brake rotors mine are still fine although I did upgrade to the teardrop full floating HD rotors at purchase time. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this.

I have driven and worked on plenty of cars with ABS and never changed my driving stile just because. If you are hammering the brakes with new found confidence then I could expect you to overheat a rotor. With or without ABS breaking is still 80/20 front rear. Front and rear brakes are still independent and should be used normally. Trying to stop 800# motorcycle with excessive rear brake will cook it. Another thing to think about is weather you got aggressive on the rear brakes before it were burnished. I have seen people cook and warp a rotor in a hundred miles by being aggressive without allowing a break in period.
I am not blaming the over heat on the ABS just the ability to apply more rear brake than before because of the superior braking capability now offered by this system.Also the rear will not lock up apprieciably so when you use it it is always working, never being pumped on and off by the rider so to speak as not to lock up. I also know how to properly utilize F/R braking on a motorcycle. Also you have altered your driving style with ABS on your cars/trucks that you drive, if you remember how the old non-ABS vehicles would react to panic stops, now we don't even think about locking brakes sliding sideways and the like so we mash them as hard as we need to. I believe that as the ABS systems trickle down to all the rest of the models and then become standard this will be the way that they are ridden and the brake system shortcomings(if present) will rear its ugly head. And yes I believe the ABS does give me new found confidence that is what it is supposed to do, stop me quicker!!!!!
