Default Looking at a Tour Glide

I'm going to make the jump to the dark side soon. I've been thinking about a 09 Ultra but I found a 89 FLTCU Tour Glide Ultra Classic with 25,000 miles in excellent condition at a dealership for 10.500. What do you think, price, dependable, would I be happy, differences between it and a 09 Ultra?
Thanks, Jeff

I agree with leohd, price is high for an '89.

You could probably find a 2000 or 2001 UC for that price. Not much comparison between the '89 and '09. Carb vs FI for the first comparison.

You're talking night and day. Unless you're a mechanic or can afford a good one, I wouldn't go with a bike 20 years old. I don't care how well it was maintained or the few miles (which it has some) it has on it. Parts fail over that time. The technology has improved a great deal over that time period. Just in the past three years 07, 08 and 09, HD has made significant improvements to thier touring line.

If you want to ride more than tinker, buy a newer of new bike. If you like to tinker in the garage and won't get upset about working on the bike, buy that one. I plan to buy an older bike but I also want to keep my current ride.

Good luck!

As the others have said, price is high and it's a 20 year old bike. Here's an example of what you can find if you look and shop. I just found an 06 EG Classic with 895 miles on it that is new as new can get all in all with trailer rental, fuel to go pick it up etc., I've got about $13,200 into it. It's as clean as any 09 on the floor. Just take your time and look around.

Prices for Harleys don't drop much below 10 grand. I know of a few 79-80 models that still fetched 9 grand.

i agree take your time and shop around. more than likely for that price that bike isnt going anywhere. like others have said, this would be a good tinkering bike. buddy of mine has and 82 tour glide and it runs like a champ. course he is always tinkering on it. but to each his own. if that is the bike you must have, then by all means get it. just weight your options first.

I suggest you get a really clear idea of what you want of your new bike before making a decision. I have owned my 1990 FLHS from new and wouldn't swap it for a later bike, simply because I have developed it little by little over the years and not much of the original bike is standard now. We are taking a 3,000 mile trip on it into Europe (we live in the UK) in June and have no worries about getting back home.

When that 89 was made Harley made no more than 50,000 bikes a year. These days thay make several times that number and can invest far more in developing their bikes, which are much more refined than early evos. But that is why some of us like evos! Whether the current twincams are 'better' is a matter you must decide! If you can, try riding that bike and also a modern one.

We could give you a list as long as your arm of the things to do, to improve either the 89 or an 09, to keep you spending on your ride. Take a buddy and go have another look at that 89 and eye up the later bikes as well. Whatever you decide the forums here will provide life support!

If you posted this question in the Evo Classic forum you would get different views!

If you were shopping for a new car, would you buy a 1989 model with 25,000 miles for half the price?
